Index | Chapter 2 - Adjectives | Possible Answers

Course materials

Choose a coursebook for each of two different levels or for different age groups. Consider how much attention is paid to adjectives in each. You may find the following checklist of points useful.

  1. Are words taught in groups according to meaning? (For example, the book might teach adjectives to describe aspects of personality such as cheerful, sentimental, strong-willed or food such as tasty, delicious, salty, spicy.)
  2. Are adjectives taught with their opposites (for example, hot/cold)?
  3. Are distinctions made between words with similar meaning (for example, classic/classical)?
  4. Is attention paid systematically to suffixes and prefixes?
  5. Is attention paid to comparative and superlative forms?
  6. Is attention paid to word order in groups of adjectives?
  7. Is attention paid to whether adjectives are gradable or ungradeable?
  8. Is attention paid to ways of intensifying adjectives?
