Making an impression

A. What kind of "dress code" does your company have?
Read what these people have to say about the way they dress for work.

"I am a sales manager for a well-known sports company in the USA. In our company, we have a very strong sense of image. We don't wear suits and ties or boring executive clothes, like other people. Instead we wear sweatshirts and training shoes. We have to look cool and energetic. Even in the office, there is a sporty atmosphere. There are posters everywhere of famous sports heroes, wearing cool sunglasses and sporty clothes."

"I work for a large bank in Ecuador, as a chief accountant. We have a very strict dress code in the bank. Everyone has to wear a uniform - if you don't, you can get fired. On the floor where I work, there is a sign above the mirror: 'this is how the customer sees you'. You see, it's very important in South America to dress well, so we have to look smart at all times."

"I am the co-owner of a small company called, "Executive Language Services". We offer English classes to business people in banks, hotels, oil companies, and all kinds of multi-national companies. It is a very competitive business, so our image is important. I tell teachers that they have to look professional. Men have to wear ties; women have to wear skirts or dresses - no trousers."

C. Pair work.   Talk about these questions.

  • the sports company?
  • the bank?
  • the English school?
Do you agree with them?
How important is physical appearance in your country?

Teacher's notes

This activity gives students an opportunity to express their own opinions.

Check that students understand all the vocabulary they need to complete the activity.

It's likely that students will have very different responses depending on which area they work in or are studying.

Encourage them to find at least one other item of vocabulary to use when describing what they think.

Ask them if they have any experience of companies which fit into the models presented here. Try to make this activity as free speaking as possible.

It might be an idea to take notes and give feedback afterwards.

An activity on dress codes and working culture can also be found on Further Ahead Video, Sequence 1, Welcome to Prince, Unit 7
