In the restaurant

A. Do you know how to order a meal and reserve a table in the restaurant?

B. Match the waiter's questions/statements with the customer's responses.

Waiter Customer
Have you finished? Yes. I'll have chicken soup for starter and roast beef to follow.
For how many people? No, I haven't, not quite.
Would you like your check? Yes, the name's Brook.
How would you like your steak? OK, never mind. I'll have steak instead.
Smoking or no smoking? Yes, this is delicious, thanks.
Would you like anything else? Medium-rare, please.
Is everything all right? Three.
Are you ready to order? No-smoking, please.
I'm sorry - we don’t have beef now. No, nothing else.
Good evening, do you have a reservation? Yes, please. Do you accept Mastercard?

Now put the dialog in a logical order. When you have finished, read it with a partner.

C. Pair Work
Now practise the dialogs from the skeleton below. The waiter’s first and last sentences are in bold to help you.

Waiter Customer

_____________________ ready to order? Yes. I'll have_____________________ for starter and roast beef _____________________

_____________________ finished? No, _____________________ , not quite.
_____________________ alright? Yes, this is _____________________ , thanks.
_____________________ your check? Yes, please. _____________________ Mastercard?

D. Pair work

Practise the dialog again using your own questions and answers where you can.

Teacher's notes

Concentrate on your student's pronunciation and intonation in this section. The aim of this exercise is for students to learn common restaurant expressions and to be able to respond appropriately to a waiter.

The most important thing for the teacher is to focus on correct pronunciation. (see B)

B. The responses of the customer are as shown below. The order of the dialog is flexible to some extent, but this is a suggested order.

C. When the students have finished putting the dialog in order, the teacher should model and drill the pronunciation, particularly problem areas.

D. After the students have done this exercise, get them to role-play the dialog without any reference to the written text. (As in the Reading Task, Unit 13, it would be ideal to have some table items for this, especially a menu, a plate and a check.)
