Academic vocabulary

Collocations

Collocations are combinations of words that go together naturally. For example instead of a big amount, it is more natural to say a substantial amount.

Phrasal verbs

Phrasal verbs are verbs which have a main verb and a particle which, together, make one meaning. For example a plane takes off from the airport; an adult looks after a child.

Idioms

Idioms are fixed expressions whose meaning is not obvious from the individual words that make it. For example instead of saying I'm really busy you might say I'm snowed under or I'm up to my ears in work.
