Jargon Buster

Here we look at words and concepts that have recently been in the news and suggest ways in which they can be used in your classes.

Spin-off

What is it?

A spin-off is a new organisation that has come about by splitting a previous one into two or more smaller ones. It can also be used to denote a new product (such as a new TV series) which is related to a previous one in some way.

Why is the term in the news?

Time Warner has announced it will be forming a new spin-off company, Time Warner Cable Inc., thereby separating its cable TV business from the main company. It also means Time Warner will be leaving the media distribution business altogether. Time Warner, the original company, will see a windfall of $9.25 billion as a result.

How can I use it in class?

The term can be used to discuss the concept of large conglomerates vs. smaller companies which focus on one particular product or service. Specific points to discuss can include:

  • Which is in a company’s better interest: to focus on one particular product or service, or to diversify?
  • Which is in the consumer’s better interest: to buy products or services from large conglomerates or from smaller companies which specialise in one particular area?
  • Ask your students for personal anecdotal evidence of dealing with both types of companies, and ask them to express a personal opinion

This is a good point of discussion since it is unlikely that there will be a clear outcome. There are pros and cons on both sides and students are likely to be able to identify these.
