Work-life balance
What is it?
It is the need to find a balance in life between work and leisure time. Many people feel that work has taken over their lives, and that they don't have enough time for family and friends or just leisure time in general.
Why is it in the news?
According to a survey of 5,000 workers by the careers' website beyond.com, nearly six out of 10 put a healthy work-life balance as their most important workplace goal for 2008.

How can I use it in class?
This can be a filler for those 5 minute holes in your class. You won't need hand outs or lengthy explanations.
Write the phrase work-life balance on the board. Elicit from students what it might mean.
Once the group has agreed on a definition you could have your class talk about the following:
- How would you describe your work-life balance? Are you happy with it? Why or why not?
- In the last five years has work taken more of your time? Do you work longer hours now and have less time for your personal life?
- Do you have control over your work-life balance? Would you be able to reduce the number of hours you work?
