Jargon Buster
Here we look at words and concepts that have recently been in the news and suggest ways in which they can be used in your classes.
Emerging Market
What is it?
The four largest emerging markets are currently deemed to be Brazil, Russia, India and China. These markets are becoming increasingly important since they are already in a position to enter into trade agreements of value, and it is likely that the value of these agreements will rise in the future. In the current economic uncertainty, these markets may prove pivotal in preventing a global slump turning into a full blown recession.
Why is the term in the news?
Emerging markets are in the news for a number of reasons. Firstly, they have not been hit by the credit crunch to the same extent as countries such as the USA and the UK, because the rate of individual borrowing tends to be less than in more developed economies.
Secondly, large companies in emerging markets are now attracting interest from multinational corporations. Ford, for example, is in talks with the Indian company Tata Motors, who recently developed the One Lakh car which will sell for around $2,500. Such mergers can be beneficial to both parties since they allow the newly-formed company to tap into complementary markets.
Thirdly, companies from emerging markets are now in a position to perform complete takeovers of high-value companies in developed economies such as the recent buyout of the Anglo-Dutch steel concern Corus by the India based company Tata Steel. The only competing company was Brazil's CSN group - also from an emerging market.
How can I use it in class?
Write the term 'emerging market' on the board and ask students to brainstorm the meaning. Lead students into discussions in the following areas:
- What does the term mean?
- Do emerging markets have an impact on your industry? In what way?
- Are the impacts beneficial to the emerging market, to your market or to both? Are they mutually beneficial?
- Are you aware of any mergers or takeovers in your industry involving a company from an emerging market and one from your own country?
