Jargon Buster
Here we look at words and concepts that have recently been in the news and suggest ways in which they can be used in your classes.
Primary elections
What is it?
A primary election is one which allows voters to reduce a number of candidates to a smaller number who will then go forward to a subsequent election.
Why is the term in the news?
In the USA, the Presidential election process began at the beginning of this year. In the USA, parties do not choose their candidates; instead candidates put themselves forward to the voting population, who then vote in local primaries in order to reduce the number of candidates. By the end of the primary cycle (May 2008) each party will have one candidate who will then go forward to the next election stage.
How can I use it in class?
The topic of elections in general, the US Presidential elections in particular and comparing election processes can all be exploited in a number of ways:
- Ask students to compare the US-style election with that in their countries. In the US the whole process takes nearly a year; is it the same in their country?
- The US has primaries; in other countries the parties nominate their representatives. How is it done in your students’ countries? Which system is preferable? Why?
- How often do elections take place in your students’ countries? (In the USA it’s every four years).
- Students can even prepare a presentation on the election mechanisms in their country, and/or a presentation contrasting the US-style election to theirs.
