News from IATEFL 2008 - did you help write a dictionary?
42nd IATEFL Annual Conference and Exhibition, 7-11 April 2008, Exeter, UK
Did you help write a dictionary?!
![]() |
Conference delegates became lexicographers in training at IATEFL this year, thanks to Melissa Good and Patrick Gillard. In
their talk on Tuesday 8th April, Patrick and Melissa invited the audience to consider the kind of information learners need
and expect from a good learner dictionary, and then to create a typical dictionary entry. All participants received a free copy of the brand new third edition of Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary, and a certificate to prove their 'trainee lexicographer' status! Here's the entry that Patrick and Melissa's audience created: punch /p.nt./(frequency = A)* verb (T) (regular verb) to hit someone or something with your fist: He got angry and punched me in the face. Collocations: punch sb. on the nose/punch sb. in the face/stomach. *This frequency label 'A' is based on the E (Essential), I (Improver) and A (Advanced) labellingin the new third edition of Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary. --------------------------- (This was the entry for the first sense of the verb to punch, which was written by the audience at the talk "Come and help us write a dictionary!" on 8th April 2008 at the IATEFL Conference in Exeter, UK. Thank you very much to everyone who took part!) |

| 30 years of CHLT series editors! | Ben Goldstein presents Working With Images, due for publication in August | CHLT - inspiring language teachers for 30 years |
For 30 years, Cambridge Handbooks for Language Teachers have been known and loved by teachers the world over. The current series editor, Scott Thornbury, was joined on the Cambridge
ELT stand at IATEFL by the former holders of the role, Michael Swan and Penny Ur, to celebrate the anniversary with a wonderful
birthday cake and a glass or two of bubbly!
The newest handbook, Working with Images, is due for publication in August 2008. It takes a fresh look at the use of images in language teaching and their - currently
underexploited - potential to promote ideas and discussion. As you would expect from a Cambridge Handbook, there are plenty
of practical ideas you can apply immediately to your own teaching situation, as well as a bonus CD-ROM of over 500 ready-to-use
images.
Cambridge University Press Signature Event
Scott Thornbury also co-presented the Cambridge University Press Signature Event, with Rose Senior
(author of award-winning The Experience of Language Teaching in the Cambridge Language Teaching Library series).

Antoinette pens another winner! On behalf of the Extensive Reading Foundation, Alan Maley presents Antoinette Moses with her certificate as winner of the ERF's 2007 Language Learner Literature Award, for Let Me Out!, her Starter Level title in the Cambridge English Readers series. Her other titles in the series are Girl at the Window (Starter Level), John Doe (Level 1), Apollo's Gold (Level 2), Dolphin Music (Level 5) and Frozen Pizza and Other Slices of Life (Level 6, short stories) - as you can see, Antoinette's talents extend across both levels and genres!
