Cambridge Companions to Literature are stimulating and reliable introductions to major authors, periods and genres. They consist of specially commissioned essays, written by experts and designed for student readers. For the author Companions each writer is placed in literary and historical context; their major works are analysed, either in separate chapters or grouped according to theme, and their influence on later writers assessed. Useful reference material includes a chronology and reading lists. The generic and topical Companions cover periods of English literature such as Old English or the Victorian Novel, and literary genres such as or Modernism or Greek Tragedy, giving the literature student vital contextual information about political, social, religious and artistic relationships. Important individual writers and works may be singled out for special treatment or covered in thematic chapters. Drama companions are often illustrated with performance photographs. Companions serve student needs at university level. They are also ideal background reading for teachers researching a new topic and for those seeking generic or period context for the study of an individual author. |
