About the author

Kenneth R. Lang, Professor of Astronomy at Tufts University, uses the Very Large Array radio telescope and modern spacecraft, such as SOHO and Yohkoh, to investigate activity on the Sun. He is also a well known writer, having published nine books translated into ten languages as well as more than 150 professional articles. Lang's books include Astrophysical Formulae, published in a third enlarged edition in 1999, the popular Sun, Earth and Sky, and the prize-winning Wanderers in Space - Prix du livre de l'Astronomie in 1994.

Professor Lang has been a Visiting Senior Scientist in Solar Physics at NASA Headquarters and a Fulbright Scholar in Italy. He is a member of the International Astronomical Union, the Royal Astronomical Society and the American Astronomical Society. Professor Lang lives with his wife, Marcella, and his three children, Julia, David and Marina, in Arlington, Massachusetts.
