 | | An Economic History of Twentieth-Century Europe Economic Regimes from Laissez-Faire to Globalization Ivan T. Berend
£21.99
Major new survey of economic regimes and economic performance in Europe throughout the twentieth century.
'This is a major new economic history of twentieth-century Europe by a distinguished practitioner who has lived through more than two-thirds of the period. The book is very successfully organised around the rise and fall of economic regimes in different periods. This intriguing story takes the reader from the classical laissez-faire system before 1914, via interwar experiments in the regulated market system, Fascist economic dirigisme and socialist central planning, to the post-1945 rise of the mixed economy and welfare state in an integrating western Europe, and finally from the 1980s, back in the direction of laissez-faire in a globalising economy. It is essential reading for any serious student of European economic history, twentieth-century history, or comparative economic systems.'

 | | Central Bank Cooperation at the Bank for International Settlements, 1930–1973 Gianni Toniolo, Assisted by Piet Clement
£80.00
This book covers the history of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) from 1930–1973.
'I enjoyed very much reading this book. It is based on very extensive archival research. Moreover, Toniolo brings a strong combination of a wide historical erudition and a firm grasp of economic theory to the project. The book is well written and Toniolo usually knows how to convey the key issues in sometimes difficult and arcane financial matters. Moreover, he is very good at situating them in their political context, both internationally and in the domestic politics of the different countries. Also, Toniolo often uses economic theory to structure and bring together the main arguments. His judgement is careful and balanced.'

 | | European Integration, 1950–2003 Superstate or New Market Economy? John Gillingham
£20.99
Considers European integration from a historical perspective, and speculates on where it might be headed.
‘John Gillingham’s fascinating history of European integration brings out the shifts of gears, changes of direction and divergent impulses that brought the European Union to its present established but contested shape as the triumph of market over state. Gillingham wanted his book to ‘trumpet like an elephant’, and it does. To extend his metaphor, it gores any number of sacred cows, from the myths of the Founding Fathers and of American benevolence to the European social model. It will stimulate lively and constructive debate.’
