The Reader's Brain

About the Book

Have you ever found yourself re-reading the same sentence four or five times and thought 'I should get more sleep'? Are you clueless as to why one paragraph just seems to 'flow' while you simply can't recall the contents of another? Guess what: you are not alone. Even the best writers fail to grasp why their writing works. The Reader's Brain is the first science-based guide to writing, employing cutting-edge research on how our minds process written language, to ensure your writing can be read quickly, assimilated easily, and recalled precisely - exactly what we need to transform anyone into a highly effective writer. Using the 5Cs - clarity, continuity, coherence, concision, and cadence - this book combines irreverent humour with easy-to-follow principles that will make readers perceive your sentences, paragraphs, and documents to be clear, concise, and effective.

> Uses a science-based approach to writing, demonstrating why some words, sentences and paragraphs are easier to read and recall than others

> Makes key points readily accessible with lists, sidebars, features and before/after examples, enabling the reader to skim and scan material to use key principles for any writing task

> Conveys science and principles in a playful, irreverent prose, and will appeal to a wide audience, from professionals and academics to students and lay readers

Someone recently told me that my CV was too crazy for anyone to think it a work of fiction. This perception stems from my straddling so many disciplines, even if my career’s through-line has always involved writing. I have published articles in two dozen disciplines, written fiction selected for a Norton Anthology, worked as a partner in an advertising agency, written copy for a list of Fortune 500 clients, helped launch a now-highly successful IT start-up with a 20 year-old, and served as a researcher or faculty member in four fields. Over the years, I’ve taught writing to everyone from wet-behind-the-ears eighteen year-olds to former astronauts and neurosurgeons. I’ve also enlisted the help of experts in finance, management, gastroenterology, endocrinology, and cardiology to launch new ideas into the world. My early work on hypertext, reading, and comprehension, begun in the mid-eighties, has been translated into fifteen languages and still pops up on graduate syllabi worldwide. To date, I have taught professionals how to write in virtually every field, from anthropology to veterinary medicine. My reward: nearly every week, I receive reports from former students about the usefulness of my science-based approach to writing and its role in advancing their careers.
