This text was required in a graduate level course in TESOL grammar at UMBC. On the plus side, there are great summaries of grammar items at key points, helpful exercises, advice for addressing grammar difficulties according to Ss' L1, and leveled activities at the end of each chapter. On the minus side, the book provides confusing, and in my opinion, sometimes incorrect information in several places, e.g. present participles vs. gerunds. Likewise, the texts relies on a series of initials (e.g. NP for noun phrase) but there is no central chart listing all the abbreviations in one place. The text is helpful for informing an instructor's background knowledge of English grammar but it would be incomprehensible to anyone other than a grad student/grammarian. My biggest complaint is that 12 weeks into the course, the book started falling apart. Over a year later, I have to bind it with a rubber band to keep all the pages together. Despite the limitations commented upon, I wanted to rate it a 4.0 or even a 4.5, but but the fact it is physically difficult to work with means it is not a quick and accessible tool for me, rendering it almost useless.
I think that i need this book urgently to guide me in my classroom as Im first grade teacher and I want a book to support my way of teaching grammar. Thanks a lot
