Academic Listening Encounters: Human Behavior

Miriam Espeseth

Academic Listening Encounters: Human Behavior is a high-intermediate to low-advanced text that uses a sustained-content approach to help students develop the listening, note-taking, and discussion skills they need to meet the demands of academic courses. The academic content focus in this text is psychology and communications. The Student Audio CD in the back of the book contains the lecture portion of the Audio Program for extra practice.

High Intermediate to Low Advanced

High-interest topics include stress, intelligence, and friendship.
Each chapter explores its topic through a warm-up listening activity, informal interviews, and a two-part academic lecture.
Pre-listening tasks expose students to vocabulary they will encounter in the interviews and lectures, and help them build background knowledge of the topic.
Students practice crucial listening skills, such as summarizing what they have heard, listening for implied information, and listening for specific information.
Note-taking skills presented include using symbols and abbreviations, and organizing notes.
The listening materials serve as stimuli for note-taking activities, individual and group presentations, and discussion.
