The town San Jorge lies high on the northwest shoulder of the Volcán Chaparrastique
to the east of Las Marías. Before the war, the area north of San Jorge
was largely planted in medium-size coffee estates, as shown in the map drawn in
1992 by members of the Cooperativa Candelaria, Un Nuevo Amanecer (Candelaria,
a New Dawn). The town is shown at the lower edge of the map. Each field and grove
is labeled with the name of the owner and the crop indicated with symbols. The
area north of town included several fincas exceeding 70 hectares (100 manzanas).
The wealth of the largest property, 280 hectares (400 manzanas), is symbolized
by the large estate house shown. The symbol for coffee varies significantly across
the map, perhaps depicting the size and power of the estates. The caption along
the right-hand edge reads (literally translated): "This is how it was in
the year 1970, the place of the lands where the Cooperativa Candelaria A New Dawn
was born."
