For more than fifty years, Shakespeare Survey has been the UK's leading Shakespeare journal, rivalled worldwide only by its American counterpart Shakespeare Quarterly. Founded by Allardyce Nicoll in 1948, Survey's annual volumes contain a group of articles on a theme, some articles on other aspects of Shakespeare and a series of major review pieces considering not only the year's publications in Shakespeare studies but also the year's UK Shakespeare productions. Survey is sold in over forty countries. It includes the latest and best in Shakespearean scholarship and criticism from the English-speaking world, but is committed to ensuring that its articles are accessible to a wider readership than Shakespeare academics. From the first, Shakespeare Survey has had an especial interest in Shakespeare in performance, including not only studies of productions past and present but also interviews with major figures from the world of Shakespeare in the theatre.

Alternate volumes bring together some of the best papers from the International Shakespeare Conference held at the Shakespeare Institute. Themes for future volumes include 'Shakespeare and Comedy' (to be published in 2003), 'Macbeth and its Afterlife' (2004) and 'Writing About Shakespeare' (2005). As always, the editor is happy to receive contributions, all of which are refereed by Survey's distinguished Editorial Advisory Board, made up of some of the world's leading Shakespeare scholars.

With the new paperback reprint of the entire run, Survey's distinguished history will be seen afresh, a sign of the energy and brilliance of Shakespeare studies across half a century.
