Cambridge University Press and Gutenberg Technology join forces to deliver a unique online reading experience

The English Language Teaching (ELT) division of Cambridge University Press has engaged Gutenberg Technology to provide students and adult learners around the world access to their award-winning products and services on a range of mobile devices and platforms.

The Cambridge Bookshelf, designed and built by Gutenberg Technology, comes loaded with interactive tools and features designed to exploit the full functionality of the EPUB 3 standard adopted by the Press’s ELT division. Cambridge ELT and Gutenberg Technology will be providing a preview of the bookshelf app on May 29th at the annual conference of the IDPF, the standard-setting organization for EPUB 3.

“We had very specific requirements. We wanted a white-label solution that would give us full control over page layouts and the ability to add unique functionality for English language learners. Gutenberg Technology has the cutting-edge technology that will get our product to market quickly and efficiently. Their solution, as well as their involvement in the EPUB 3 standardization process, matched our requirements,” noted Jeff Chen, Head of Digital Operations, Cambridge University Press ELT.

“Gutenberg Technology is convinced that the industry is moving towards the EPUB 3 standard,” adds François-Xavier Husherr, CEO of Gutenberg Technology, “That is why we have worked for over a year to adapt our reader to this standard, which was in any case very similar to our proprietary format”. As a further sign of its commitment to emerging norms, Gutenberg has strived to make its “MyEBookFactory” SaaS publishing platform fully compatible with the EDUPUB protocol.
