Press titles sweep 2019 MAA book awards

The Medieval Academy of America (MAA) has awarded all three of its 2019 book awards, including the prestigious Haskins Medal, to Press-published titles.

How Marriage Became One of the Sacraments: The Sacramental Theology of Marriage from its Medieval Origins to the Council of Trent by Philip L. Reynolds was named the winner of the annual medal, presented for a distinguished book in the field of medieval studies.

This marks the third year in a row a book published by the Press has taken home the prize. Muslims of Medieval Latin Christendom, c. 1050-1614 by Brian A. Catlos and A History of Balance, 1250-1375: The Emergence of a New Model of Equilibrium and its Impact on Thought by Joel Kaye were previously awarded in 2018 and 2017, respectively.

The MAA also gave the John Nicholas Brown Prize, awarded annually for a first book of outstanding quality, to The Monstrous New Art: Divided Forms in the Late Medieval Motet by Anna Zayaruznaya

Finally, Epigram Art, and Devotion in Later Byzantium by Ivan Drpić was named the winner of the Karen Gould Prize in Art History, presented for a book or monograph in medieval art history of outstanding quality.

“Given the circulation of Byzantine devotional objects in western Europe, this multidisciplinary study makes an important contribution to the wider scope of medieval art history,” the Karen Gould Prize committee wrote. “It also provides an exemplary method for the reading and investigation of such texts that should be widely emulated.”
