This volume brings together the work of many of the leading (predominantly French) anthropologists who, over the past few years, have undertaken a major reappraisal of the structure and operation of Tuareg society. That Tuareg kinship organisation constitutes an anomalous case has long been recognised by ethnographers, but until recently the precise nature of this peculiarity has been little understood. Such fundamental questions as the nature of kinship terminologies, marital choice and the existence (or otherwise) of lineages are raised by the contributors, and the volume as a whole will remain a major source of reference for many years to come. Of the eleven essays, nine are written in French and two in English.
