First published in 1909, as the second edition of a 1900 original, this book forms part of the Cambridge Historical Series. It was written to provide a comprehensive review of the political, economic and social progress of the Canadian provinces. The text begins with chapters on the French Régime and British rule, before moving through to the evolution and establishment of the Canadian Confederation, and the relationship with the United States. The appendices section contains a comparison between the constitutions of the Canadian Dominion and the Australian Commonwealth, together with a detailed bibliography. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in historiography and perspectives on Canadian history.
