Adam Versényi indaga en la historia del teatro latinoamericano desde la época precolombina hasta el drama contemporáneo. El teatro en América Latina ha sido históricamente una poderosa fuerza para el cambio social y frecuentemente ha combinado lo reliogioso y lo político con la práctica del espectáculo para crear un estilo de drama típico de la región. Versényi investiga esta específica interconexión de religión, política y teatro, llegando a la conclusión de que está presente ya desde los primeros contactos entre Cortés y los aztecas, y a través de la influencia española en el drama contemporáneo de marcada carga política en países como Cuba, Argentina, Chile y otros.
