The fourth edition of this well-known textbook discusses the key methods used in organic synthesis, showing the value and scope of these methods and how they are used in the synthesis of complex molecules. All the text from the third edition has been revised, to produce a modern account of traditional methods and an up-to-date description of recent advancements in synthetic chemistry since the previous edition. A new chapter on the functionalisation of alkenes has been included and greater emphasis on highly stereoselective reactions and radical chemistry has been placed. Reference style has been improved to include footnotes on each page, allowing easy and rapid access to the primary literature. The book will be of significant interest to chemistry and biochemistry students at advanced undergraduate and graduate level, as well as researchers in academia and industry who wish to familiarise themselves with modern synthetic methods.

    • Updated version of successful textbook including a wide scope of advanced level material
    • Re-structured text allows for more flowing, logical reading
    • References included in footnotes, allowing easy and rapid access to the primary literature

    Reviews & endorsements

'… a very good introduction to the methodology of organic synthesis, and should be essential reading for advanced undergraduate courses, and for all postgraduates and others actively involved in organic synthesis.' Nature

'… the excellent organization and selectivity provides very clear (often outstanding) examples to illustrate not only the principal value of and limitations of the method but also a qualitative comparison with other methods.' Journal of Chemical Education

'… firmly established within the literary repertoire of any self-respecting synthetic organic chemist … Coldham's style is clear and didactic, getting the message across with minimum of fuss, and this is echoed by the clarity of the diagrams … serves as a worthy tribute to Carruthers' memory. I am sure that he would be proud of, and flattered by, the care and attention to detail that Iain Coldham has put into this new edition.' Chemistry & Industry
