David Norton has recently re-edited the King James Bible for Cambridge. This two-volume set comprises his new edition of the KJV (with the Apocrypha), and an accompanying volume describing the historical background to that project, explaining his editorial principles and providing substantial lists and tables of variant readings. Modern KJVs have until now been based on the 1769 version, which contains many layers of changes made, both knowingly and unintentionally, by successive printers and editors. Using evidence as diverse as the manuscript work of the original translators, and the results of extensive computer collation of electronically held texts, Norton has carefully stripped away accretions and errors, and produced a scholarly edition of the King James Bible for the new century that will restore the authority of the 1611 translation. This two-volume set will be indispensable to scholars of the English Bible, literature, and publishing history.
