Blended learning: Problems and Prospects at the Higher Level

In this webinar we look briefly at the general issues involved in blended learning (BL) programmes and current trends in BL. We then focus on particular problems in creating a fully blended programme for higher level learners, especially issues connected with methodology and the teaching of speaking. Face-to-face classrooms are places where teachers and higher-level learners can react moment-by-moment to the demands of noticing important features of the language and to the conditions of natural spoken interaction. But what happens in fully online BL materials when the online programme becomes both the material and the tutor? We look at some possible solutions.
Mike McCarthy and Jeanne McCarten are two of the authors of Viewpoint, a two-level series for adults and young adults, taking learners from a high intermediate to advanced level of proficiency (CEFR: B2 – C1) Mike is Emeritus Professor of Applied Linguistics at the University of Nottingham, UK. He is the author of titles such as English Vocabulary in Use and Spoken Language and Applied Linguistics, and also helped develop the Cambridge spoken corpora. Jeanne taught English in Sweden, France, Malaysia and UK before becoming an ELT writer, and is interested in applying insights from corpus research to language teaching.
