Demystifying Chinese defence spending: A fascinating new article from The China Quarterly

Following China’s announcement of its annual defence budget at the National People’s Congress last month, The China Quarterly has published a new article that will help analysts, journalists and scholars better interpret China’s defence spending.
Demystifying China’s Defence Spending: Less Mysterious in the Aggregate, by Adam Liff and Andrew Erickson, argues that China’s limited transparency about its defence spending harms strategic trust, but that the reality is not mysterious: defence spending supports PLA modernization and personnel development, and aims to secure China’s homeland and assert control over contested territorial and maritime claims.
Using original detailed analysis of statistical data, the article offers greater context and perspective for Chinese and Western discussions of China’s rise and military build-up.
