The China Quarterly Announces Winner of the 2013 Gordon White Prize

The China Quarterly is pleased to announce that the winner of the 2013 Gordon White Prize is Wen-Hsuan Tsai and Peng-Hsiang Kao’s article on ‘Secret Codes of Political Propaganda: The Unknown System of Writing Teams’, published in the June 2013 issue.

The article examines the use of largely unknown networks of writing teams by some Party units within the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) which propagate the policies or perspectives of a particular unit by publishing feature articles in Party journals. These writing teams often make use of a pseudonym in the form of a person’s name, leading outsiders to believe that the work is written by a journalist. In fact, the pseudonyms of the Party unit writing teams function as a form of secret code that reveals which unit’s views an article reflects.

The Gordon White Prize is awarded annually for the most original article or research report published in The China Quarterly in the relevant year.

To mark the announcement, Wen-Hsuan Tsai and Peng-Hsiang Kao’s article can be accessed for free until 31 July 2014.
