Why responsible and ethical business is high on CUP’s agenda for 2015

Recent well-publicised cases of corporate wrongdoing have placed ethical business firmly on the public agenda. Not surprisingly academic scholarship in this area is growing, with business ethics and corporate social responsibility taught as core modules by thousands of business schools worldwide as well as featuring on philosophy, law and IR courses.

2015 is set to be a key year for Cambridge University Press in this subject area with significant expansion planned on both our books and journals programmes.

Cambridge has published cutting-edge research on responsible and ethical business for some time and its ‘Business, Value Creation and Society’ monographic series (edited by R. Edward Freeman, Jeremy Moon and Mette Morsing) is one of the most active series on Cambridge’s business and management list. Research on this area also features in our ‘Business and Public Policy’ book series (edited by  Aseem Prakash), as well as in our new series ‘Organisations and the Natural Environment’ (edited by Jorge Rivera and J. Alberto Aragón-Correa). Since 2011 Cambridge has published the journal Ethics and International Affairs for the Carnegie Council.

Our book-publishing output in this area is increasing and truly leading the field. In 2014 Corporate Responsibility: The American Experience by Archie B. Carroll et al, won the Academy of Management’s Social Issues in Management book prize. Business Ethics: A Contemporary Approach by Gael McDonald publishes this month and will be the most up-to-date textbook available on the market, see an interview with the author Gael McDonald here. Two new monographs Happiness and Virtue Ethics in Business by Alejo Sison and Ethics and the Global Financial Crisis by Boudewijn de Bruin will also publish this month.

From 2015 Cambridge will become the new publisher of Business Ethics Quarterly, the premier journal on business ethics worldwide. Now in its 25th volume and edited by Denis G. Arnold, this multidisciplinary journal has a 2-year Impact Factor of 2.702 and was ranked 1st of 50 Ethics journals on the 2013 Journal Citation Reports™. Cambridge is proud to be publishing this journal on behalf of the leading scholarly association in this area, the Society for Business Ethics, and the first Cambridge-published issue will be available this month.

Cambridge is seriously committed to growing scholarship in this subject area and in December 2015 will launch our new Business and Human Rights Journal to coincide with the 4th UN Business and Human Rights Forum. This exciting new publication has been set up by Cambridge and its Editors-in-Chief (Surya Deva, Anita Ramasastry, Michael Santoro and Florian Wettstein) precisely to foster research as well as directly influence business practice in this young sub-field of business ethics.

We believe it is the interdisciplinary approach taken by all these Cambridge publications that adds real value and we hope that, through our fast-growing list of publications in responsible and ethical business, we will genuinely reach everyone with an interest in this important area.
