The American Political Science Association and Cambridge University Press collaborate to launch APSA Preprints

New service to launch August 2019 will boost speed and impact of early research

The American Political Science Association (APSA) will be launching its own open research preprint platform in collaboration with Cambridge University Press, called APSA Preprints, at the Association’s Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C.  The service will be a home for early research outputs in political science and related disciplines and the first of its kind to be hosted on Cambridge University Press’s developing open research platform.

It will make the latest research and data available to everyone with an internet connection with a focus on rapid turnaround times for submission, giving researchers and members of the wider public an early window into academic insights and analysis.

APSA Preprints will also help to create a more effective and collaborative research cycle in political science. It will connect the Association’s conference papers and other early research outputs with the submission, peer review and production process of APSA’s leading stable of journals including American Political Science Review, Perspectives on Politics, and PS: Political Science & Politics.

A range of benefits for authors and readers are planned, including comprehensive article-level metrics and the latest social sharing, commenting and discussion tools, as well as the powerful search and discovery features already in place on Cambridge Core, the Press’s platform for its academic books and journals.

The development of the open research platform is the latest step in the Press’s drive to lead the creation of a sustainable, open future for academic publishing, with further announcements planned for later in the year.

Steven Rathgeb Smith, Executive Director at APSA, said: “APSA is very excited to offer a new preprint platform in collaboration with Cambridge University Press. This open research platform is an excellent complement to our existing publishing portfolio and provides important opportunities for APSA members to publish and share their research.  This innovative service will also promote quicker dissemination of member research and facilitate greater discussion and public engagement.”

Brigitte Shull, Senior Vice-President USA and Director of Scholarly Communications Research and Development at the Press, said: “We are proud of our long and successful partnership with APSA and thrilled to have the Association as our first partner as we create an open research platform. APSA Preprints gives us a vehicle to work together to support content and collaboration in new and meaningful ways.”
