{"id":37997,"date":"2020-10-02T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-10-02T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cupblog.bluefusesystems.com\/?p=37997"},"modified":"2021-07-14T19:31:42","modified_gmt":"2021-07-14T18:31:42","slug":"press-wins-first-ever-sustainability-award-from-ipg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/blog\/2020\/10\/02\/press-wins-first-ever-sustainability-award-from-ipg\/","title":{"rendered":"Press wins first ever Sustainability Award from IPG"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"bsf_rt_marker\"><\/div>\n<p>We are delighted to have won the inaugural Sustainability Award at this year\u2019s UK Independent Publishing Awards!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Press was named as the winner at a virtual ceremony on Tuesday, 22 September and the award was accepted by Helen Griggs, Global Director of Environment, Procurement and Supply. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#0b597b\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Watch Helen\u2019s acceptance speech below:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<figure><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1000\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ms4esViG5mE?start=2459\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Launched in 2007, the awards are run by the Independent Publisher\u2019s Guild and are the UK\u2019s biggest annual celebration of independent publishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The judges were impressed by the Press\u2019s entry, which showcased the powerful combination of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/browse-subjects\/earth-and-environmental-sciences\/climate-and-sustainability\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">publishing on climate change and sustainability<\/a>, concrete actions to make its operations more sustainable and the energy and enthusiasm of colleagues whose ideas and actions are coordinated by an Environment Action Group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They said: <strong><span style=\"color:#265ad4\" class=\"has-inline-color\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"color:#0b597b\" class=\"has-inline-color\">CUP have brought a lot of visibility to the subject of sustainability and are making big changes themselves.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In accepting the award, Helen said: \u201cWe are keenly aware that, as a global publisher of education and research, we help to inform and shape debate around climate change and sustainability. That, really, has been the impetus behind our goal to make the Press a carbon neutral business, and it\u2019s a goal that our colleagues have wholeheartedly embraced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn recognising the combination of our publishing on these topics and our efforts as a business, as colleagues and as individuals, you are also recognising and rewarding the sincere efforts and hard work of very many people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#0b597b\" class=\"has-inline-color\">\u201cIt will also spur us on, because to be truly sustainable takes effort. It encompasses everything from lights and air conditioning in our offices, the food in our canteens and the plates it\u2019s served on, through the publishing and printing process and then on, right through our global supply chain to our customers, who can then take and build on the knowledge and enquiry they find in our books, journals and learning materials.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year saw the Press publish important academic research on sustainability alongside successful trade books like <em>There Is No Planet B<\/em> , <em>Food or War <\/em>and most recently <em>The Citizen&#8217;s Guide to Climate Success<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/gb\/academic\/subjects\/earth-and-environmental-science\/environmental-science\/there-no-planet-b-handbook-make-or-break-years?format=PB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.cambridge.org\/97811084\/39589\/cover\/9781108439589.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/gb\/academic\/subjects\/earth-and-environmental-science\/environmental-policy-economics-and-law\/food-or-war?format=PB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.cambridge.org\/97811087\/12903\/cover\/9781108712903.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/gb\/academic\/subjects\/economics\/natural-resource-and-environmental-economics\/citizens-guide-climate-success-overcoming-myths-hinder-progress?format=PB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.cambridge.org\/97811087\/42665\/cover\/9781108742665.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, the Press installed one of the UK&#8217;s largest flat roof solar installations at its Cambridge office alongside more energy efficient lighting and heating, air conditioning and ventilation systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The year also saw the World Wildlife Fund award the Press its highest rating of 3 Trees for sustainable timber performance on its annual Timber Scorecard report.
