1 - The educational and evaluative benefits of EMQs

Summary

It is worth briefly covering the College's intentions in introducing this new paper and the educational and evaluative benefits of the EMQ format. Basic knowledge of these purposes should aid the candidate's preparation for this innovative new style of examination paper. Much more detail on the preparations made by the College committees and the ethos behind the new examination can be found in the article on which this chapter is based.

There are a number of compelling reasons that promoted the introduction of EMQs for the College. They:

☑ are relatively easy to write well

☑ can be computer marked with unerring accuracy

☑ are a form of examination that will increase the validity and reliability of our overall assessment of candidates

☑ test more complex understanding than multiple choice questions (MCQs)

☑ allow a wider coverage of subjects and domain than the short answer papers.

EMQs are now widely and successfully used in undergraduate-level medical examinations and have started to be used at postgraduate level. The Royal College of Psychiatrists introduced EMQs in the Spring 2003 sitting of the Part 1 MRCPsych examination, following encouraging results in a pilot paper. They have been successfully used in the membership examinations of the Royal College of Surgeons (Glasgow and London) and Royal College of General Practitioners. Also, the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health uses EMQs in its Diploma in Child Health. The PLAB test is entirely in EMQ format.
