Summary

This chapter discusses some of the rules of greatest relevance to the peacetime, essentially domestic, employment of the kinds of technology discussed in the ensuing Chapters. This review is conducted on two levels. The first level examines domestic and international legal regimes of general relevance - such as, respectively, criminal law or the COLREGS - in order to provide some illustrations as to the overall legal baselines, provided in 'general' law, which effect the everyday use of such technologies. The second level of examination focusses upon the interaction of military technologies with select specialised legal regimes, and other legal regimes of specific relevance to novel or emerging technology. These include the impact upon human rights of surveillace technologies, defence export control regimes, and the LOAC obligation to review new means and methods of warfare.
