Summary

After finishing Great Expectations, in June 1861, Charles Dickens visited Knebworth, the family estate of his friend and fellow author Edward Bulwer Lytton. The famous (or notorious) result of this encounter was that Dickens changed the ending of his novel prior to its publication in All the Year Round. Upon sending the last installment of the serial to Bulwer Lytton, Dickens wrote, “I hope you will like the alteration that is entirely due to you.”
