Summary

This chapter examines some of the ways in which the presence of religious liberty can help generate peace and stability, therefore functioning as a critical defense against violent religious extremism, particularly terrorism. Just as religion can be a contributor to division, exclusivism and violence, so too can it be a crucial enabler of peace. Religious communities, drawing on their scriptures, beliefs and practices, have historically made incredibly positive contributions to society, which have led to more peaceful and stable settings. Freedom of religion has the effect of bringing diverse communities together and creating cultures of tolerance. This chapter discusses the cases of Senegal, the United States, and South Africa—countries where high levels of religiosity and religious heterogeneity might have led to violence as they have elsewhere, but have instead witnessed relative harmony between faith groups, made possible, in part, by their commitment to freedom of religion.
