Summary
NO FIRE to autumn's oak, apple-stray or leaf,
dipped instead in pitch: our life, the one we forged
(a forgery!) and stood beside. No longer the summer
in which we lived, calling each other home—
we are talked out, fallen through, inside a machine
that nicks us sleepless, knowing cold to mean a coming
frost, our winter, and lost as talk on our tongues.
Bagged and tube-hung, sacked, the skin a drape,
inward-stripped and junked into a constant eddy
of blood, the sound of you before your voice is gone.
