Subcortical consciousness: Implications for fetal anesthesia and analgesia

  • Roland R. Brusseau (a1) and George A. Mashour (a2)
Abstract

In this commentary we discuss the possibility of subcortical consciousness and its implications for fetal anesthesia and analgesia. We review the neural development of structural and functional elements that may participate in conscious representation, with a particular focus on the experience of pain.
