For an elliptic torus in SL(n), explicit formulae are given for the germs which are associated to the regular unipotent conjugacy classes. Using them, a formula is found for the germ associated to the "subregular" class, the class whose Jordan canonical form contains a 1 x 1 and an (n - 1) x (n - 1) block.

It gives me quite extraordinary pleasure to have been asked to deliver the Jeffrey-Williams lecture of the Canadian Mathematical Society. The reasons are manifold. First of all Canada was my home for the most formative years of my life — from 16 to 23 — and was in fact the first country willing to take me on as an adopted son. I was of course born in Budapest, but in Europe the geographical accidents of birth are not taken seriously, rather I inherited my father's status and so managed to become stateless "by induction" so to speak.

Buckminster Fuller has coined the name tetrahelix for a column of regular tetrahedra, each sharing two faces with neighbours, one 'below' and one 'above' [A. H. Boerdijk, Philips Research Reports 7 (1952), p. 309]. Such a column could well be employed in architecture, because it is both strong and attractive. The (n — 1)-dimensional analogue is based on a skew polygon such that every n consecutive vertices belong to a regular simplex. The generalized twist which shifts this polygon one step along itself is found to have the characteristic equation

Two constructions of cohomology classes for congruence subgroups of unit groups of quadratic forms over totally real number fields are given and shown to coincide. One is geometric, using cycles, and the other is analytic, using the oscillator (Weil) representation. Considerable background material on this representation is given.

If t is self-adjoint the structure of O(t) is well known. The purpose of this paper is to detemine the structure of O(t) in the general case. This structure is also determined in the complex and quaternionic case, as well as the case when the condition on t is replaced by τ2 = ∊ι, ∊ ∈ ℝ.

Let l be a polygonal link in a 3-sphere S3 and a branched covering of l, which depends on the choice of a monodromy map ϕ. Let be the link in over l. In this paper we determine the exact position of in for some cases. For instance, if l is a torus link ((n + 1)p, n) and ϕ is an appropriate monodromy map of the fundamental group of S3 - l into the symmetric group of degree n + 1, then is an S3 and l is a torus link (np,n2). The 3-fold irregular branched covering of a doubled knot k is an S3, if it exists. The position of the link over k is shown in a figure. The link over knot 61 is obtained by K. A. Perko and the author, independently, and shown without proof in a paper by R. H. Fox [Can. J. Math. 22 (1970), 193-201]. The result mentioned in the above includes this case.

The purpose of this paper is to generalize the Lindelöf-Čirka theorem.

This is, formally, a precise analogue of a theorem of Deligne [1] on exponential sums (mod p). However the proof uses no more than elementary algebraic geometry.

Residual canonical correlations are defined and are derived in terms of canonical correlations. Some measures of residual association are also defined, in terms of the residual canonical correlations and some possible applications are suggested.

The projective special linear group PSL(V) is generated by dations. Among all factorizations of p ∈ PSL(V) into dations there will be one (or more) with the least number of factors. We determine this number, i.e. we solve the length problem for the projective special linear group. We solve a similar problem for the projective unimodular group which is generated by harmonic homologies. The projective special linear group and the projective unimodular group are the most important special cases of projective hyperreflection groups. We also solve the length problem for the general case.

Some authors have employed the method and technique of differential inequalities to obtain fairly general results concerning the existence and asymptotic behavior, as ∊ → 0+, of the solutions of scalar boundary value problems

In this paper, we extend these results to vector boundary value problems, under analogous stability conditions on the solution u = u(t) of the reduced equation 0 = h(t,u).

Two types of asymptotic behavior are studied, depending on whether the reduced solution u(t) has or does not have a continuous first derivative in (a,b), leading to the phenomena of boundary and angular layers.

We consider Dirichlet series R(s), constructed by taking scalar products of Hecke L-series with ray-class characters. Using a theorem of G. W. Mackey on tensor products of representations of finite groups we show that R(s) has a meromorphic continuation into Re(s) > 1/2 (obtained by more sophisticated methods in [l]-[5]); we then obtain estimates for the growth of R(s) on vertical lines. Via the Mellin transformation we deduce asymptotics for various weighted moment sums involving ideals of given ray-class and norm, in one or several fields simultaneously.

The terms of maximal rank in Fourier expansions of Eisenstein series for GL(n, ℤ) are obtained by an analogue of a method of Chowla and Selberg. The coefficients involve matrix analogues of divisor functions as well as K-Bessel functions for GL(n). The discussion involves a few properties of Hecke operators.

Throughout this paper rings are understood to be commutative with unity. In this paper we prove the general approximation theorem for valuations whose infinite ideals have large Jacobson radicals. We give an example in which it is shown that approximation theorems for Manis valuations do not hold in the general case. Also we prove that every valuation pair (Rv, Pv) of a total quotient ring T(R) whose infinite ideal has large Jacobson radical is a Prüfer valuation pair.

Let T be a linear transformation acting on the space of n x n complex matrices. Let G(k) be the set of all hermitian matrices with k positive and n — k negative eigenvalues. Let T map some indefinite inertia class G(k) onto itself. We classify all such T. The possibilities are congruence, congruence followed by transposition, and, if n = 2k, it is possible that — T can be a congruence or a congruence followed by transposing. In other words, negation is an admissible transformation when n = 2k.

Let C(X, Y) denote the set of continuous functions from a metric space X to a metric space Y. Viewing elements of C(X, Y) as closed subsets of X × Y, we say {fn} converges topologically to f if Li fn = Lsfn = f. If X is connected, then topological convergence in C(X,R) does not imply pointwise convergence, but if X is locally connected and Y is locally compact, then topological convergence in C(X, Y) is equivalent to uniform convergence on compact subsets of X. Pathological aspects of topological convergence for seemingly nice spaces are also presented, along with a positive Baire category result.

The paper discusses some consequences of weak monotonicity for connected maps in relation to essential connectedness of a space. The first main result gives conditions under which the image by a connected map of an essentially connected space is essentially connected. The second is that, for a connected mapping of a connected, 1 .c. space to a WLOTS-wise and essentially connected space, w-monotonicity implies monotonicity. The remainder of the paper discusses continuity properties of connected, w-monotone mappings with WLOTS-wise and essentially connected range.

The exact form for the gamma factor for the L-function corresponding to the m-th symmetric power of a cuspidal automorphic representation of PGL(2) is given. This information is used to obtain, via a theorem of Landau, bounds for the eigenvalues of Hecke operators.

B. Grünbaum, J. N. Lillington and lately R. J. Gardner, S. Kwapien and D. P. Laurie have considered inequalities defined by three concurrent straight lines in the interior of a planar compact convex set. In this note we prove two elegant conjectures by R. J. Gardner, S. Kwapien and D. P. Laurie.
