In the Meno we have a chance, rare in Greek philosophy, to compare a philosophical theory with the data which make up its ostensible evidence. Meno asks if there is any way Socrates can show him that “learning” is recollecting. Socrates offers to produce the proof on the spot. Meno will see the slave-boy learning, and this will show that he was recollecting. I wish to make the most of this opportunity to examine the presented data before considering the theory. To this I will devote the first and somewhat longer part of the paper, where I will seek by controversial argument to establish the right interpretation of the text. While doing this, it will be convenient to use “recollection” in quotes, suspending judgment upon its philosophical implications and even withholding attention from its dictionary meaning. Plato says the boy is “recollecting” and so shall I of this and all other situations which are equivalent to it in a sense which I shall make clear. When a decision has been reached on what exactly is taking place when people are “recollecting” in this purely nominative sense, it will be time to examine Plato's thesis that this “recollecting” is recollecting.

Qu'on songe seulement aux processus infinis dont la maîtrise leur a permis de devenir un instrument sans rival dans l'exploration du monde quantitatif.

The doctrine of emergent evolutionism has been before the philosophical world for over fifty years, but there are several reasons why another look at it may be opportune. In the first place, the concept of emergence has been analysed with considerable precision during recent decades so that its meaning is more evident now than when it was first introduced. Secondly, new versions of evolutionary theory have made their appearance in this period, and the extent to which they support or undermine the notion of emergence needs to be investigated. Thirdly, the semi-popular writings of Teilhard de Chardin have shown how much vitality evolutionary ideas have in the present intellectual climate. Yet these writings also show how much confusion will be engendered if the treatment is not philosophically adequate, and especially if it fails to grapple with the concept of emergence. Hence it may be useful to look afresh at this whole subject.

Mon propos est d'explorer les voies ouvertes à la philosophie contemporaine par ce qu'on pourrait appeler la greffe du problème herméneutique sur la méthode phénoménologique. Je me bornerai à un bref rappel historique, avant d'entreprendre l'investigation proprement dite, laquelle devrait, à son terme au moins, donner un sens acceptable à la notion d'existence,—un sens où s'exprimerait précisément le renouvellement de la phénoménologie par l'herméneutique.

Le débat actuel sur la pensée structurale soulève diverses questions qui intéressent l'interprétation de la philosophie hégélienne, et particulièrement l'interprétation hégélienne de la psychanalyse.

Lucien Sebag estime que l'histoire et la structure représentent deux types d'explications qui se distinguent nettement par leur méthode d'opération tout autant que par les résultats obtenus. On peut conceptualiser, nous dit-il, de deux façons: I) en considérant des conduites individuelles ou collectives dont le compte rendu forme alors un récit. Ce mode de pensée est de type causal.

Je crois qu'il est utile, avant de passer à une étude historique des théories de l'évolution, de préciser quelques notions de sémantique. Aujourd'hui, on extend par « théorie scientifique » dans le domaine des sciences naturelles une explication soit d'une structure, soit d'un mécanisme, d'un lien causal, présentant un caractère plus ou moins hypothétique mais de toute façon basée sur les faits et vérifiée par eux. Or, la première grande théorie de l'évolution biologique, celle de Lamarck, se veut expérimentale mais est en réalité beaucoup plus spéculative qu'expérimentée. Et pourtant cette explication lamarckienne est une des pièces les plus importantes de l'histoire de la théorie de l'évolution et ne saurait être négligée dans notre étude. Je n'ai pas l'intention de faire ici le procès de la valeur d'une théorie scientifique biologique mais je peux simplement souligner qu'il m'apparaît nécessaire d'élargir pour les besoins de la présente analyse la signification actuelle du terme « théorie », de restreindre les exigences de rigueur interne d'une démonstration et de savoir accepter à l'occasion ce qui—en regard de l'usage actuel du terme—ne peut être considéré que comme une intuition ou même une idée assez vague et imprécise.

Many writers, and even Professor Hempel himself, have said that Hempel's definition of confirmation has the consequence that ‘AH ravens are black’ is confirmed by any non-black non-raven. This consequence is often referred to as the paradox of the ravens, and I will sometimes refer to it so. But I do not assume that this supposed consequence is paradoxical, and in fact I will not touch at all on the question whether it is. My object is just to show that in any case it is not a consequence of Hempel's definition and that its closest relative, among the genuine consequences of that definition, is not paradoxical, even superficially.

L'esthétique, philosophique, notamment depuis Bosanquet, cherche à se donner une histoire, et qu'elle n'y réussisse guère porte à réfléchir tout autant sur l'histoire et la philosophie que sur l'esthétique elle-même. Certains ouvrages de parution récente nous préviennent d'ailleurs de ne pas nous agiter à côté de la question en nous lançant dans des querelles de mots. Les philosophies, nous le savons depuis longtemps, et ils ne se privent pas de nous le rappeler avec une Constance indéfectible, sont de fameux parleurs, toujours un peu sophistiques sur les bords et rarement socratiques tout au fond. Le bruit des paroles nombreuses et haut sonnantes donne l'illusion de dissiper le vide et de dissoudre dans la conscience les choses sans cesse gênantes par leur massivité. Beaucoup de temps et d'érgie se gaspillent à dirimer des faits dont le nom nous dérange. L'esthétique a souffert des maîtres-ès-lexicologie. Et il faut bien avouer que les philosophes esthéticiens ont souvent œuvré contre leur propre intérêt en cultivant avec une prédilection douteuse “cet obscurantisme bien-pensant qui ne cesse de menacer la philosophie”.

Whether one can decide or choose to believe is a difficult problem, with important consequences for ethics. An appeal to ordinary language is not likely to be decisive. On occasion, “I choose to believe,” “he adopted the belief,” and “do not believe,” find use. Of course, one can decide or choose to pursue belief. Pascal gave a prescription for producing certain religious beliefs. There are other prescriptions for other beliefs. Is there a stronger sense in which I can decide or choose to believe ? I do not use a causal recipe in performing many actions. Is there some way of choosing or deciding to believe that does not involve causal recipes.

En un temps où l'Église catholique prend pleinement conscience d'elle-même et approfondit le message qu'elle doit transmettre au monde, l'histoire des manifestations de l'esprit laïque, à une époque qui passe pour avoir réalisé mieux qu'aucune autre l'idéal de la chrétienté, mérite de retenir l'attention. Is there such a thing as a ‘Logic of Discovery’? Do we even have a consistent idea of such a thing? The approved answer to this seems to be “No.” Thus Popper argues (The Logic of Scientific Discovery) “The initial stage, the act of conceiving or inventing a theory, seems to me neither to call for logical analysis nor to be susceptible of it.” (p. 31.) Again, “… there is no such thing as a logical method of having new ideas, or a logical reconstruction of this process.” (p. 32.) Reichenbach writes that philosophy of science “… cannot be concerned with [reasons for suggesting hypotheses], but only with [reasons for accepting hypotheses].” (Experience and Prediction, p. 382.) Braithwaite elaborates: “The solution of these historical problems involves the individual psychology of thinking and the sociology of thought. None of these questions are our business here.” (Scientific Explanation, pp. 20, 21.)

Most philosophers, I think, would hold that there is a great deal more to be noticed about moral judgments than any special connections which they may be supposed to have with displays of emotion. I strongly hold this myself. Many philosophers, however—and I am one of them—are inclined to believe that special connections of this kind do exist. Agitation counts in ethics. But just what does it count for? What is to be made of the central fact that the same forms of words to which both ethical and “emotive” meaning is ascribed may sometimes be used when emotions are being manifested and sometimes when they are not? Stevenson acknowledges, “There are emotively active and emotively inactive uses of literally all the ethical terms”. But how, in view of this fact, can it be illuminating to say that some forms of words—taken to be the characteristic forms of words for expressing moral judgments—have anything like a distinctive function of expressing (or “venting”) emotions?

The Robbers' Paradox has provided a focus of discussion in some of the recent articles on deontic logic. The paradox affects those systems which recognize in some way the maxim ‘Ought entails can’ and stems from a law, derivable in these systems, which can be put into words in this way:

(i) If doing a necessitates my doing b, then if doing b is forbidden, doing a is forbidden.

It is readily conceded that “pain” is a term in a public language. But the concession leads us at once to speak of a criterion or criteria for its proper ascription; and the concept of a criterion of pain is a particularly difficult concept to lay bare. The issue has its classic source in Wittgenstein, where it extends far beyond the boundaries of mental entities. It is hard to say what Wittgenstein's view actually is regarding criteria; and it may be more profitable to canvass certain untenable possibilities, with an eye to the problem, than to settle what can only be a question of a sort of archaeology.

Parallèlement à la Cité de Dieu, Augustin écrivait dans son traité sur la Trinité que cette vérité originaire est une certitude du type “je sais que je vis”. C'est par une science intime (intima scientia) que mon âme a l'intelligence de sa vie si elle se trompe, tout comme elle a la certitude du bonheur même si elle s'égare sur l'objet de sa béatitude.

To know is to believe but to believe is not necessarily to know. The latter, unfortunate fact gives rise quite naturally to the question: How can we distinguish between those beliefs that qualify as items of knowledge and those that do not? The standard reply given to this question by philosophers is that knowledge is justified belief. Although the reply sounds eminently reasonable it does not really answer the question. Rather than settling the issue it succeeds instead in stirring up a host of philosophical problems of the most thorny and baffling kind. So difficult do these problems become that they have driven many philosophers to the skeptical conclusion that it is impossible to provide any justification for our beliefs at all. My main object in this paper will be to pursue what seems to me to be the most important and difficult of these problems and to examine some of the recent solutions that philosophers have offered for it. Before beginning this task, however, it might be well to clarify the notion of knowledge (as it is normally understood) a bit more fully. Just what qualifies a belief as a justified belief and thus as an item of knowledge?

If someone reports that he had been thinking that he would very much like to seduce his sister, an appropriate comment might be: “Shame on you for having such a nasty idea.” But if one reports that he dreamt he seduced his sister the situation appears quite different, for while we might be repulsed by the dream shaming seems, to say the least, far less appropriate.

We do not ordinarily, if ever, say things like, “It was bad (naughty, immoral, etc.) of you to dream that.” A child may be sent to bed without supper for saying that he hates his father, but not for reporting a dream which clearly expresses hate for his father.

Le désir de l'indubitable est un fait indubitable. Toutes les theories de la connaissance en sont à la fois la conséquence et la preuve. Toutes les doctrines épistémologiques se développent à partir de l'idée qu'on se fait de la nature des données premières. On juge la connaissance par rapport à ses éléments qu'on accepte comme certains. Le certain, l'indubitable est une limite au delà de laquelle on ne peut pas, et on ne désire pas aller. C'est aussi une ratio ultima de tout effort intellectuel, le but suprême et la justification finale des modes ou des étapes de la connaissance qui restent en deçà de leur idéal. Sans lui, tout savoir n'est qu'une illusion, une folle aventure, sans but, sans valeur et sans espoir. Dans cette éventualité, la raison n'est qu'une déraison, une faculté superflue, sans justification, done un désordre dans la nature.

Our common stock of words embodies all the distinctions men have found worth drawing, and the connexions they have found worth marking, in the lifetimes of many generations: these surely are likely to be more numerous, more sound, since they have stood up to the long test of the survival of the fittest, and more subtle, at least in all ordinary and reasonably practical matters, than any that you or I are likely to think up in our arm-chairs ofan afternoon—the most favoured alternative method.
