In this paper we derive matrix formulae in closed form for higher order moments and give sufficient conditions for higher order stationarity of Markov switching VARMA models. We provide asymptotic theory for sample higher order moments which can be used for testing multivariate normality. As an application, we propose new definitions of multivariate skewness and kurtosis measures for such models, and relate them with the existing concepts in the literature. Our work completes the statistical analysis developed in the fundamental paper of Francq and Zakoïan (2001, Econometric Theory 18, 815–818) and relates with the concepts of multivariate skewness and kurtosis proposed by Mardia (1970, Biometrika 57, 519–530), Móri, Rohatgi, and Székely (1993, Theory of Probability and its Applications 38, 547–551), and Kollo (2008, Journal of Multivariate Analysis 99, 2328–2338). Under suitable assumptions, our results imply that the sample estimators of the skewness and kurtosis measures proposed by these authors are consistent and asymptotically normally distributed. Finally, we check our theory statements numerically via Monte Carlo simulations.

We show that the slope parameter of the linear quantile regression measures a weighted average of the local slopes of the conditional quantile function. Extending this result, we also show that the slope parameter measures a weighted average of the partial effects for a general structural function. Our results support the use of linear quantile regressions for causal inference in the presence of nonlinearity and multivariate unobserved heterogeneity. The same conclusion applies to linear regressions.

This paper proposes an empirical likelihood-based estimation method for semiparametric conditional moment restriction models, which contain finite dimensional unknown parameters and unknown functions. We extend the results of Donald, Imbens, and Newey (2003, Journal of Econometrics 117, 55–93) by allowing unknown functions to be included in the conditional moment restrictions. We approximate unknown functions by a sieve method and estimate the finite dimensional parameters and unknown functions jointly. We establish consistency and derive the convergence rate of the estimator. We also show that the estimator of the finite dimensional parameters is $\sqrt n$-consistent, asymptotically normally distributed, and asymptotically efficient.

The properties of dynamic conditional correlation (DCC) models, introduced more than a decade ago, are still not entirely known. This paper fills one of the gaps by deriving weak diffusion limits of a modified version of the classical DCC model. The limiting system of stochastic differential equations is characterized by a diffusion matrix of reduced rank. The degeneracy is due to perfect collinearity between the innovations of the volatility and correlation dynamics. For the special case of constant conditional correlations, a nondegenerate diffusion limit can be obtained. Alternative sets of conditions are considered for the rate of convergence of the parameters, obtaining time-varying but deterministic variances and/or correlations. A Monte Carlo experiment confirms that the often used quasi-approximate maximum likelihood (QAML) method to estimate the diffusion parameters is inconsistent for any fixed frequency, but that it may provide reasonable approximations for sufficiently large frequencies and sample sizes.

The paper “Kernel estimation when density may not exist” (Zinde-Walsh, 2008) considered density as a generalized function given by a functional on a space of smooth functions; this made it possible to establish the limit properties of the kernel estimator without assuming the existence of the density function. This note corrects an error in that paper in the derivation of the variance of the kernel estimator. The corrected result is that in the space of generalized functions the parametric rate of convergence of the kernel density estimator to the limit Gaussian process is achievable.

This article sheds light on the asymptotic behavior of diagonal elements of projection matrices associated with instruments or regressors under many instrument/regressor asymptotics. When the diagonal elements do not exhibit variation asymptotically, certain results in the many instrument/regressor literature lead to elegant solutions and conclusions. We establish conditions when this happens, provide relevant examples, and analyze instrument designs, for which this property does or does not hold.

This paper revisits the question of parameter identification when a linear continuous time model is sampled only at equispaced points in time. Following the framework and assumptions of Phillips (1973), we consider models characterized by first-order, linear systems of stochastic differential equations and use a priori restrictions on the model parameters as identifying restrictions. A practical rank condition is derived to test whether any particular collection of at least $\left\lfloor {n/2} \right\rfloor$ general linear restrictions on the parameter matrix is sufficient for identification. We then consider extensions to incorporate prior restrictions on the covariance matrix of the disturbances, to identify the covariance matrix itself, and to address identification in models with cointegration.

This paper considers adaptive hypothesis testing for the fractional differencing parameter in a parametric ARFIMA model with unconditional heteroskedasticity of unknown form. A weighted score test based on a nonparametric variance estimator is proposed and shown to be asymptotically equivalent, under the null and local alternatives, to the Neyman-Rao effective score test constructed under Gaussianity and known variance process. The proposed test is therefore asymptotically efficient under Gaussianity. The finite sample properties of the test are investigated in a Monte Carlo experiment and shown to provide potentially large power gains over the usual unweighted long memory test.

The residual-based bootstrap is considered one of the most reliable methods for bootstrapping generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (GARCH) models. However, in terms of theoretical aspects, only the consistency of the bootstrap has been established, while the higher order asymptotic refinement remains unproven. For example, Corradi and Iglesias (2008) demonstrate the asymptotic refinement of the block bootstrap for GARCH models but leave the results of the residual-based bootstrap as a conjecture. To derive the second order asymptotic refinement of the residual-based GARCH bootstrap, we utilize the analysis in Andrews (2001, 2002) and establish the Edgeworth expansions of the t-statistics, as well as the convergence of their moments. As expected, we show that the bootstrap error in the coverage probabilities of the equal-tailed t-statistic and the corresponding test-inversion confidence intervals are at most of the order of O(n−1), where the exact order depends on the moment condition of the process. This convergence rate is faster than that of the block bootstrap, as well as that of the first order asymptotic test.
