A geometric extension algebra is an extension algebra of a semi-simple perverse sheaf (allowing shifts), e.g., a push-forward of the constant sheaf under a projective map. Particular nice situations arise for collapsings of homogeneous vector bundles over homogeneous spaces. In this paper, we study the relationship between partial flag and complete flag cases. Our main result is that the locally finite modules over the geometric extension algebras are related by a recollement. As examples, we investigate parabolic affine nil Hecke algebras, geometric extension algebras associated with parabolic Springer maps and an example of Reineke of a parabolic quiver-graded Hecke algebra.

Let Mn, n ≥ 3, be a complete hypersurface in $\mathbb{S}$n+1. When Mn is compact, we show that Mn is a homology sphere if the squared norm of its traceless second fundamental form is less than $\frac{2(n-1)}{n}$. When Mn is non-compact, we show that there are no non-trivial L2 harmonic p-forms, 1 ≤ p ≤ n − 1, on Mn under pointwise condition. We also show the non-existence of L2 harmonic 1-forms on Mn provided that Mn is minimal and $\frac{n-1}{n}$-stable. This implies that Mn has only one end. Finally, we prove that there exists an explicit positive constant C such that if the total curvature of Mn is less than C, then there are no non-trivial L2 harmonic p-forms on Mn for all 1 ≤ p ≤ n − 1.

We present a calculus that is well-adapted to homogeneous quadratic algebras. We define this calculus on Koszul cohomology – resp. homology – by cup products – resp. cap products. The Koszul homology and cohomology are interpreted in terms of derived categories. If the algebra is not Koszul, then Koszul (co)homology provides different information than Hochschild (co)homology. As an application of our calculus, the Koszul duality for Koszul cohomology algebras is proved for any quadratic algebra, and this duality is extended in some sense to Koszul homology. So, the true nature of the Koszul duality theorem is independent of any assumption on the quadratic algebra. We compute explicitly this calculus on a non-Koszul example.

Let λ be a symmetric, normal sequence space equipped with a k-symmetric, monotone norm ‖.‖λ. Also, assume that (λ, ‖.‖λ) is AK-BK. Corresponding to this sequence space λ, we study compactness of the operator ideal Kλ. We proved compactness, completeness and injectivity of the dual operator ideal Kλd. We also investigate the factorization of these operators.

Let G be a finite group acting freely on a finitistic space X having cohomology type (0, b) (for example, $\mathbb S$n × $\mathbb S$2n is a space of type (0, 1) and the one-point union $\mathbb S$n ∨ $\mathbb S$2n ∨ $\mathbb S$3n is a space of type (0, 0)). It is known that a finite group G that contains ℤp ⊕ ℤp ⊕ ℤp, p a prime, cannot act freely on $\mathbb S$n × $\mathbb S$2n. In this paper, we show that if a finite group G acts freely on a space of type (0, 1), where n is odd, then G cannot contain ℤp ⊕ ℤp, p an odd prime. For spaces of cohomology type (0, 0), we show that every p-subgroup of G is either cyclic or a generalized quaternion group. Moreover, for n even, it is shown that ℤ2 is the only group that can act freely on X.

We construct a norm on the nonzero elements of a Prüfer domain and extend this concept to the set of ideals of a Prüfer domain. These norms are used to study factorization properties Prüfer of domains.

The study of pure-injectivity is accessed from an alternative point of view. A module M is called pure-subinjective relative to a module N if for every pure extension K of N, every homomorphism N → M can be extended to a homomorphism K → M. The pure-subinjectivity domain of the module M is defined to be the class of modules N such that M is N-pure-subinjective. Basic properties of the notion of pure-subinjectivity are investigated. We obtain characterizations for various types of rings and modules, including absolutely pure (or, FP-injective) modules, von Neumann regular rings and (pure-) semisimple rings in terms of pure-subinjectivity domains. We also consider cotorsion modules, endomorphism rings of certain modules, and, for a module N, (pure) quotients of N-pure-subinjective modules.

This paper is about the connection between certain Banach-algebraic properties of a commutative Banach algebra E with unit and the associated commutative Banach algebra C(X, E) of all continuous functions from a compact Hausdorff space X into E. The properties concern Ditkin's condition and bounded relative units. We show that these properties are shared by E and C(X, E). We also consider the relationship between these properties in the algebras E, B and $\~{B}$ that appear in the so-called admissible quadruples (X, E, B, $\~{B}$).

This paper proves the existence of potentials of the first and second kind of a Frobenius like structure in a frame, which encompasses families of arrangements. The frame uses the notion of matroids. For the proof of the existence of the potentials, a power series ansatz is made. The proof that it works requires that certain decompositions of tuples of coordinate vector fields are related by certain elementary transformations. This is shown with a nontrivial result on matroid partition.

Modular curves like X0(N) and X1(N) appear very frequently in arithmetic geometry. While their complex points are obtained as a quotient of the upper half plane by some subgroups of SL2(ℤ), they allow for a more arithmetic description as a solution to a moduli problem. We wish to give such a moduli description for two other modular curves, denoted here by Xnsp(p) and Xnsp+(p) associated to non-split Cartan subgroups and their normaliser in GL2(𝔽p). These modular curves appear for instance in Serre's problem of classifying all possible Galois structures of p-torsion points on elliptic curves over number fields. We give then a moduli-theoretic interpretation and a new proof of a result of Chen (Proc. London Math. Soc. (3) 77(1) (1998), 1–38; J. Algebra231(1) (2000), 414–448).

For an element g of a group G, an Engel sink is a subset ${\mathscr E}$(g) such that for every x ∈ G all sufficiently long commutators [. . .[[x, g], g], . . ., g] belong to ${\mathscr E}$(g). A finite group is nilpotent if and only if every element has a trivial Engel sink. We prove that if in a finite group G every element has an Engel sink generating a subgroup of rank r, then G has a normal subgroup N of rank bounded in terms of r such that G/N is nilpotent.

This paper is a complement to the work of the second author on modular quotient singularities in odd characteristic. Here, we prove that if V is a three-dimensional vector space over a field of characteristic 2 and G < GL(V) is a finite subgroup generated by pseudoreflections and possessing a two-dimensional invariant subspace W such that the restriction of G to W is isomorphic to the group SL2(𝔽2n), then the quotient V/G is non-singular. This, together with earlier known results on modular quotient singularities, implies first that a theorem of Kemper and Malle on irreducible groups generated by pseudoreflections generalizes to reducible groups in dimension three, and, second, that the classification of three-dimensional isolated singularities that are quotients of a vector space by a linear finite group reduces to Vincent's classification of non-modular isolated quotient singularities.

A Lie group is called p-regular if it has the p-local homotopy type of a product of spheres. (Non)triviality of the Samelson products of the inclusions of the factor spheres into p-regular SO(2n(p) is determined, which completes the list of (non)triviality of such Samelson products in p-regular simple Lie groups. As an application, we determine the homotopy normality of the inclusion SO(2n − 1) → SO(2n) in the sense of James at any prime p.

We consider a weighted homogeneous germ of complex analytic variety (X, 0) ⊂ (ℂn, 0) and a function germ f : (ℂn, 0) → (ℂ, 0). We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for some deformations to have non-negative degree (i.e., for any additional term in the deformation, the weighted degree is not smaller) in terms of an adapted version of the relative Milnor number. We study the cases where (X, 0) is an isolated hypersurface singularity and the invariant is the Bruce-Roberts number of f with respect to (X, 0), and where (X, 0) is an isolated complete intersection or a curve singularity and the invariant is the Milnor number of the germ f: (X, 0) → ℂ. In the last part, we give some formulas for the invariants in terms of the weights and the degrees of the polynomials.

Noetherian dimer algebras form a prominent class of examples of noncommutative crepant resolutions (NCCRs). However, dimer algebras that are noetherian are quite rare, and we consider the question: how close are nonnoetherian homotopy dimer algebras to being NCCRs? To address this question, we introduce a generalization of NCCRs to nonnoetherian tiled matrix rings. We show that if a noetherian dimer algebra is obtained from a nonnoetherian homotopy dimer algebra A by contracting each arrow whose head has indegree 1, then A is a noncommutative desingularization of its nonnoetherian centre. Furthermore, if any two arrows whose tails have indegree 1 are coprime, then A is a nonnoetherian NCCR.

The problem of computing the integral cohomology ring of the symmetric square of a topological space has long been of interest, but limited progress has been made on the general case until recently. We offer a solution for the complex and quaternionic projective spaces $\mathbb{K}$Pn, by utilising their rich geometrical structure. Our description involves generators and relations, and our methods entail ideas from the literature of quantum chemistry, theoretical physics, and combinatorics. We begin with the case $\mathbb{K}$P∞, and then identify the truncation required for passage to finite n. The calculations rely upon a ladder of long exact cohomology sequences, which compares cofibrations associated to the diagonals of the symmetric square and the corresponding Borel construction. These incorporate the one-point compactifications of classic configuration spaces of unordered pairs of points in $\mathbb{K}$Pn, which are identified as Thom spaces by combining Löwdin's symmetric orthogonalisation (and its quaternionic analogue) with a dash of Pin geometry. The relations in the ensuing cohomology rings are conveniently expressed using generalised Fibonacci polynomials. Our conclusions are compatible with those of Gugnin mod torsion and Nakaoka mod 2, and with homological results of Milgram.

We provide a new computation of the K-theory of the group C*-algebra of the solvable Baumslag–Solitar group BS(1, n) (n ≠ 1); our computation is based on the Pimsner–Voiculescu 6-terms exact sequence, by viewing BS(1, n) as a semi-direct product ℤ[1/n] ⋊ ℤ. We deduce from it a new proof of the Baum–Connes conjecture with trivial coefficients for BS(1, n).

We study the homological algebra of bimodules over involutive associative algebras. We show that Braun's definition of involutive Hochschild cohomology in terms of the complex of involution-preserving derivations is indeed computing a derived functor: the ℤ/2-invariants intersected with the centre. We then introduce the corresponding involutive Hochschild homology theory and describe it as the derived functor of the pushout of ℤ/2-coinvariants and abelianization.

Milnor proved that the moduli space Md of rational maps of degree d ≥ 2 has a complex orbifold structure of dimension 2(d − 1). Let us denote by ${\mathcal S}$d the singular locus of Md and by ${\mathcal B}$d the branch locus, that is, the equivalence classes of rational maps with non-trivial holomorphic automorphisms. Milnor observed that we may identify M2 with ℂ2 and, within that identification, that ${\mathcal B}$2 is a cubic curve; so ${\mathcal B}$2 is connected and ${\mathcal S}$2 = ∅. If d ≥ 3, then it is well known that ${\mathcal S}$d = ${\mathcal B}$d. In this paper, we use simple arguments to prove the connectivity of ${\mathcal S}$d.
