A method for improving range resolution in passive radar system is to jointly use more than one transmission channel of the same illuminator of opportunity (IO). This paper specifically focuses on the exploitation of multiple adjacent digital video broadcasting-terrestrial (DVB-T) channels for achieving high-range resolution profiles with a passive radar system operating in air surveillance scenario. Firstly, we present an analysis of the ambiguity function obtained from a multichannel DVB-T source and a pre-processing technique able to improve the characteristics of the multichannel signal are presented. Afterwards, the experimental scenario is defined and detection results on aerial targets are shown.

In this paper, a new methodology to compare the robustness of sensor structures employed in radiofrequency design for test (RF DFT) architectures for RF integrated circuits (ICs) is proposed. First, the yield loss and defect level of the test technique is evaluated using a statistical model of the Circuit under Test (obtained through non-parametric statistics and copula theory). Then, by carrying out the dispersion analysis of the sensor architecture, a figure of merit is established. This methodology reduces the number of iterations in the design flow of RF DFT sensors and makes it possible to evaluate process dispersion. The case study is a SiGe:C BiCMOS LNA tested by a single-probe measurement.

In evaluating the potential of a given integrated-circuit technology, the negative conductance approach is used to estimate a maximum frequency limit for the ability of Heterojunction Bipolar Transistor (HBT) cross-coupled architecture to function as an oscillator at high frequencies. In this paper, the simple low-frequency estimation of the negative conductance, commonly used in the literature, is extended by deriving a new expression that takes into account the HBT parasitics. An expression for the frequency at which the negative conductance of the circuit crosses zero is given, which gives maximum frequency of oscillation for an ideal tank (no tank losses). In addition, the effect of the feedback capacitor, which is commonly added for direct current (DC) decoupling and boosting the negative conductance, is analyzed and new insight on the choice of the value of this capacitance is introduced. The results were proven by simulations using SiGe HBT transistors with an ft of 190 GHz.

A new design method for multi-access antennas is presented. This method is based on a modal analysis assuming the microstrip antennas as a resonant cavity. Using this cavity approach, the eigenmodes perturbation induced by the cavity deformation (adding slots or short circuits) is studied. As an application, a solution of multi-access antenna with two ports, with operating frequency bands centered approximately on digital cellular system (DCS) and universal mobile telecommunication system (UMTS)/Wi-Fi standards is developed. These two ports are isolated using the previous original design method. In addition to the design method, the innovation of the structure resides on its application in terms of flexibility, reconfigurability, and portability for the future development of a unique system that allows cross services where telephony joined multimedia and online services. The design method and the performances are validated through comparisons between simulations and measurements.

The impedance dependence of resonant tunneling diodes (RTDs) based on the GaAs/AlAs heterosystem is investigated in the range of 0.1–40 GHz. The analysis shows that the impedance of about 90% of unbiased RTDs is well described by an equivalent circuit (EC) consisting of parallel-connected resistance and capacitance and an additional resistance connected in series with this parallel combination. When a bias voltage is applied to these RTDs, one needs a “quantum” inductance LQ to describe the impedance behavior. We find the value of LQ and calculate the delay time of electrons in the quantum well (QW) of an RTD. The impedance of the rest 10% of the RTDs is well described by an EC that takes into account the recharge of localized electron states at the heterointerfaces of the active layers. Expressions for the cut-off frequencies that take into account the delay of electrons in the QW and the localized electron states at the heterointerfaces are derived. It is shown that the delay of electrons in the QW and localized electron states at the heterointerfaces may significantly reduce the cut-off frequency of RTDs.

The design of a 61.44 GHz integrated Phase-locked loop (PLL) on a 180 GHz BiCMOS technology is presented. The PLL was optimized for a very fast settling time of 4 µs as required by the system specifications. Because the receiver is using a carrier recovery circuit that can follow the slow changes of the carrier such as phase noise, the sensitivity of the bit error rate to phase noise at the receiver end is very low. As a result, to achieve the required dynamic behavior, the phase noise performance could be sacrificed and the loop bandwidth was increased until the needed settling time was achieved, while taking the suppression of the reference spurs into consideration. Capacitor multiplication was used to enable the integration of the loop filter (LF) on chip and the effect of the capacitor multiplier on the total PLL phase noise performance was quantified and evaluated. In addition, a very close matching between the measured and simulated phase noise of the system was achieved. The PLL consumes a power of 200 mW from 2 and 3 V supply voltages, while delivering a differential output power of −7 dBm, sufficient to drive the following I/Q modulator without additional amplification.

This paper proposes a systematic approach for designing and modeling letter-shaped microstrip ground slots. Twenty-three structures are investigated. For each one, a geometrical circuit model is developed. Interestingly, 21 letters have unique s-parameters (electromagnetic [EM] print). Results are confirmed by EM simulations and measurements. These results may pave the way to new applications, e.g. microwave character recognition, letter-based microwave circuits, or new radio frequency identification (RFID) structures

We report cryogenic noise temperature and gain measurements of a prototype heterodyne receiver module designed to operate in the atmospheric window centered on 150 GHz. The module utilizes monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) InP high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) amplifiers, a second harmonic mixer, and bandpass filters. Swept local oscillator (LO) measurements show an average gain of 22 dB and an average noise temperature of 87 K over a 40 GHz band from 140 to 180 GHz when the module is cooled to 22 K. A spot noise temperature of 58 K was measured at 166 GHz and is a record for cryogenic noise from HEMT amplifiers at this frequency. Intermediate frequency (IF) sweep measurements show a 20 GHz IF band with less than 94 K receiver noise temperature for a fixed LO of 83 GHz. The compact housing features a split-block design that facilitates quick assembly and a condensed arrangement of the MMIC components and bias circuitry. DC feedthroughs and nano-miniature connectors also contribute to the compact design, so that the dimensions of the moduleare approximately 2.5 cm per side.

For foreign object detection on runways, highly sensitive radar sensors give the opportunity to detect even very small objects, metallic and non-metallic, also under adverse weather conditions. As it is desirable for airport applications to install only small but robust installations along the traffic areas, millimeter-wave radars offer the advantage of small antenna apertures and miniaturized system hardware. A 220-GHz radar was developed, which is capable to serve this application, if several of these are netted to cover the whole traffic area. Although under fortunate conditions the radar allows a classification or even an identification of the debris, the complete system design incorporates 3-D time-of-flight cameras for assistance in the identification process, which are also distributed along the traffic areas. The system approach further relies upon a change detection algorithm on the netted information to discriminate non-stationary alarms and reduce the false alarm ratio.

In designing a Foreign Object Debris (FOD) detection system on airport runways, this paper deals with the performance of a 77 GHz reflectarray antenna (RA). Debris may be very small and have low radar cross section (RCS), leading to design a high gain primary-fed offset RA. To minimize the aperture blockage, the main radiation lobe is in the specular direction. The antenna has a maximum gain of 40 dBi and aperture efficiency of 50% over the frequency band 76–77 GHz. First measurements using a 77 GHz radar module were carried out on pavement.

In this paper we present a wireless data link for multi-gigabit transmission in the mmW frequency range. The link is realized using waveguide modules based on fully integrated 50 nm metamorphic high electron mobility transistor (mHEMT) transmit and receive millimeter wave monolithic integrated circuits (MMICs) and provides transmission of data rates up to 12.5 Gbit/s modulated on a 220 GHz carrier. The receiver input sensitivity is characterized down to values of −38.6 dBm and shows an error rate of 3.0 × 10−9. Measurements using a coherent link setup show bit error rates better than 1.6 × 10−9 for a data rate of 10 Gbit/s and a transmission distance of 2 m. For a distance of 20 m a real-time Digital Video Broadcasting – Satellite (DVB-S) television transmission is realized. The signal quality after the wireless link is sufficient for a commercial DVB-S receiver to display the television programs.

Retrieval of cloud parameters in weather radar benefits from polarimetric measurements. Most polarimetric radars measure the full backscatter matrix (BSM) using a few alternating polarized sounding signals. Using specially encoded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals however, the BSM can be measured in a single simultaneous transmission of two orthogonally polarized signals. Based on a set of parameters for weather radar, the properties of such a signal are explored and its merit as a useful capability is shown.

This paper presents a planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) for ultra-wide band (UWB) communication, which is printed on a dielectric substrate of FR4-epoxy with 4.4 relative permittivity (ɛr), 2 mm thickness. This antenna is designed to be used in a 2.9–10.7 GHz frequency band, and a very wide bandwidth is realized by the addition of a parasitic element and a J-shaped slot to the PIFA. The effects of varying the parameters of the antenna on the performance have been investigated.

The direct measurement of the radiation pattern of an antenna is often unreachable. A near-field sampling followed by a near-field/far-field (NF/FF) transformation is therefore substituted. This process is, in most cases, applied to antennas placed in free-space or over a perfect electric conductor. On the contrary, few results concern real environment conditions. Nevertheless, it is well known that the nature of the soil can drastically change the radiating characteristic of an antenna. The lack of information about the behavior of the antenna in real conditions can give rise to substantial errors in the evaluation of the performances of electromagnetic devices. The aim of this paper is then to propose a new NF/FF transformation able to reliably supply the field radiated by an antenna placed over a plane, homogeneous, dielectric, and lossy interface. The method is based on the cylindrical-wave expansion of the electric field. The real soil is taken into account by means of its reflection coefficients. First results are given for simple antennas and for both transverse magnetic and transverse electric polarizations.

A new structure is proposed in this article, to operate as wideband and wide-angle flat Radome. In this structure several dielectric and ferrite layers are placed successively, one next to the other, to behave as a matched layer. First, the relationship between the permittivity and permeability of a required fictitious mixed material is obtained. Then the required permittivity and permeability of dielectric and ferrite layers are obtained at desired incidence angle. The performance of the proposed structure is investigated and validated using some theoretical and simulation examples.

A 77-GHz–directional folded dipole antenna integrated in an embedded wafer level ball grid array package is presented. For the characterization of the antenna, a frequency multiplier is embedded, which scales the 4.25-GHz input signal up to 76.5 GHz and allows the use of a commercial signal source. The antenna structure is manufactured at the metallic layer, in the fan-out area of the package, and is directly connected to the monolithically integrated transceiver. The gain of the antenna is about 7 dBi, measured over a large bandwidth of about 8 GHz. The combination of the frequency multiplier with a 77-GHz transceiver and the on-package antenna is a promising approach for a system-in-package to future radar modules for automotive radar applications. Such a module avoids 77-GHz transitions to the printed circuit board and hence simplifies the design and manufacturing of the radar sensor significantly.

A 15–32 GHz miniature single-balanced gate mixer is proposed and analyzed. It achieves a smaller chip area with acceptable conversion gain and port-to-port isolation. In addition, the design procedure is described in detail. This mixer, fabricated in 90 nm digital CMOS technology, demonstrates a measured conversion loss of 1 dB and higher than 30 dB RF-to-LO port isolation from 17 to 32 GHz, at a local oscillator (LO) driver power of −4.3 dBm. The total dc power consumption is only 6 mW from a 1.2 V supply, including output buffer. The low dc power consumption and LO driver power reduce the power budget, and the proposed miniature rat-race hybrid facilitates integration in a receiver.

In this paper, the design of compact diplexers and triplexers with dual-mode cavities is presented. Such devices are composed of coupled resonators without additional waveguide element, leading to a more compact architecture. Two topologies of compact diplexers are implemented and compared to a standard manifold diplexer. A hardware prototype is fabricated and measured for experimental verification. A compact triplexer is finally introduced for extending the concept to more than three ports.

This paper focuses on the design of a telemetry antenna system intended for small satellites. It provides an axial ratio (AR) lower than 3 dB over ±60° conical space angle with over 20% of bandwidth. The antenna consists of a multilayer patch element fed by a wideband feeding circuit. The latter is an appropriate adjustment of 90° hybrid couplers and 180° ring coupler. We show that this design provides high-quality circular polarization properties for agile small satellites without having to suspend their mission to download their data and also without sacrificing the antenna low profile and wide bandwidth. The antenna is fabricated and the experimental performance is presented and followed by a discussion.

The paper presents the first attempt to develop parameters that are invariant to polarization, aimed at classification and recognition of complex radar objects. Both the simplest (two-point) model and multipoint models of a complex object are analyzed using the so-called emergence principle and a generalization of the interference laws. The polarization invariant parameters of scattered fields and their statistical parameters, including autocorrelation functions and space spectra, are found. The experimental validation of the analysis results is presented.
