Megacerops kuwagatarhinus n. sp., an unusual brontothere (Mammalia, Perissodactyla) with distally forked horns

  • Bryn J. Mader (a1) and John P. Alexander (a2)
Abstract

A new species of Megacerops, M. kuwagatarhinus, is described from deposits belonging to the White River Group in southeastern Montana. Megacerops kuwagatarhinus is distinguished from all other species of Megacerops by the peculiar morphology of the horns, which are bifurcated distally into two well-developed branches. Two specimens from the Hunter Quarry of Saskatchewan, Canada, also share this horn morphology and are referred to the species.
