We present a fast and spectrally accurate numerical scheme for the evaluation of the gyroaveraged electrostatic potential in non-periodic gyrokinetic-Poisson simulations. Our method relies on a reformulation of the gyrokinetic-Poisson system in which the gyroaverage in Poisson’s equation is computed for the compactly supported charge density instead of the non-periodic, non-compactly supported potential itself. We calculate this gyroaverage with a combination of two Fourier transforms and a Hankel transform, which has the near optimal run-time complexity $O(N_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}}(P+\hat{P})\log (P+\hat{P}))$, where $P$ is the number of spatial grid points, $\hat{P}$ the number of grid points in Fourier space and $N_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}}$ the number of grid points in velocity space. We present numerical examples illustrating the performance of our code and demonstrating geometric convergence of the error.

Using two-dimensional hybrid expanding box simulations we study the competition between the continuously driven parallel proton temperature anisotropy and fire hose instabilities in collisionless homogeneous plasmas. For a quasi-radial ambient magnetic field the expansion drives $T_{p\Vert }>T_{p\bot }$ and the system becomes eventually unstable with respect to the dominant parallel fire hose instability. This instability is generally unable to counteract the induced anisotropization and the system typically becomes unstable with respect to the oblique fire hose instability later on. The oblique instability efficiently reduces the anisotropy and the system rapidly stabilizes, while a significant part of the generated electromagnetic fluctuations is damped to protons. As long as the magnetic field is in the quasi-radial direction, this evolution repeats itself and the electromagnetic fluctuations accumulate. For a sufficiently oblique magnetic field the expansion drives $T_{p\bot }>T_{p\Vert }$ and brings the system to the stable region with respect to the fire hose instabilities.

The effect of the magnetic field gradient in the discharge channel of a Hall thruster on the ionization of the neutral gas and power deposition on the wall is studied through adopting the 2D-3V particle-in-cell (PIC) and Monte Carlo collisions (MCC) model. The research shows that by gradually increasing the magnetic field gradient while keeping the maximum magnetic intensity at the channel exit and the anode position unchanged, the ionization region moves towards the channel exit and then a second ionization region appears near the anode region. Meanwhile, power deposition on the walls decreases initially and then increases. To avoid power deposition on the walls produced by electrons and ions which are ionized in the second ionization region, the anode position is moved towards the channel exit as the magnetic field gradient is increased; when the anode position remains at the zero magnetic field position, power deposition on the walls decreases, which can effectively reduce the temperature and thermal load of the discharge channel.

A drift-kinetic model to describe the plasma dynamics in the scrape-off layer region of tokamak devices at arbitrary collisionality is derived. Our formulation is based on a gyroaveraged Lagrangian description of the charged particle motion, and the corresponding drift-kinetic Boltzmann equation that includes a full Coulomb collision operator. Using a Hermite–Laguerre velocity space decomposition of the gyroaveraged distribution function, a set of equations to evolve the coefficients of the expansion is presented. By evaluating explicitly the moments of the Coulomb collision operator, distribution functions arbitrarily far from equilibrium can be studied at arbitrary collisionalities. A fluid closure in the high-collisionality limit is presented, and the corresponding fluid equations are compared with previously derived fluid models.

Plasma turbulence occurs ubiquitously in space and astrophysical plasmas, mediating the nonlinear transfer of energy from large-scale electromagnetic fields and plasma flows to small scales at which the energy may be ultimately converted to plasma heat. But plasma turbulence also generically leads to a tangling of the magnetic field that threads through the plasma. The resulting wander of the magnetic field lines may significantly impact a number of important physical processes, including the propagation of cosmic rays and energetic particles, confinement in magnetic fusion devices and the fundamental processes of turbulence, magnetic reconnection and particle acceleration. The various potential impacts of magnetic field line wander are reviewed in detail, and a number of important theoretical considerations are identified that may influence the development and saturation of magnetic field line wander in astrophysical plasma turbulence. The results of nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations of kinetic Alfvén wave turbulence of sub-ion length scales are evaluated to understand the development and saturation of the turbulent magnetic energy spectrum and of the magnetic field line wander. It is found that turbulent space and astrophysical plasmas are generally expected to contain a stochastic magnetic field due to the tangling of the field by strong plasma turbulence. Future work will explore how the saturated magnetic field line wander varies as a function of the amplitude of the plasma turbulence and the ratio of the thermal to magnetic pressure, known as the plasma beta.

The self-similar expansion of an adiabatic electronegative dusty plasma (consisting of inertialess adiabatic electrons, inertialess adiabatic ions and inertial adiabatic negatively charged dust fluids) is theoretically investigated by employing the self-similar approach. It is found that the effects of the plasma adiabaticity (represented by the adiabatic index $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FE}$) and dusty plasma parameters (determined by dust temperature and initial dust population) significantly modify the nature of the plasma expansion. The implications of our results are expected to play an important role in understanding the physics of the expansion of space and laboratory electronegative dusty plasmas.

We discuss the self-consistent dynamics of plasmas by means of a Hamiltonian formalism for a system of $N$ near-resonant electrons interacting with a single Langmuir wave. The connection with the Vlasov description is revisited through the numerical calculation of the van Kampen-like eigenfrequencies of the linearized dynamics for many degrees of freedom. Both the exponential-like growth as well as damping of the Langmuir wave are shown to emerge from a phase mixing effect among beam modes, revealing unexpected similarities between the stable and unstable regimes.

The bootstrap current and flow velocity of a low-collisionality stellarator plasma are calculated. As far as possible, the analysis is carried out in a uniform way across all low-collisionality regimes in general stellarator geometry, assuming only that the confinement is good enough that the plasma is approximately in local thermodynamic equilibrium. It is found that conventional expressions for the ion flow speed and bootstrap current in the low-collisionality limit are accurate only in the $1/\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}$-collisionality regime and need to be modified in the $\sqrt{\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}}$-regime. The correction due to finite collisionality is also discussed and is found to scale as $\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}^{2/5}$.

A set of layer equations for determining the stability of semi-collisional tearing modes in an axisymmetric torus, incorporating neoclassical physics, in the small ion Larmor radius limit, is provided. These can be used as an inner layer module for inclusion in numerical codes that asymptotically match the layer to toroidal calculations of the tearing mode stability index, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E5}^{\prime }$. They are more complete than in earlier work and comprise equations for the perturbed electron density and temperature, the ion temperature, Ampère’s law and the vorticity equation, amounting to a twelvth-order set of radial differential equations. While the toroidal geometry is kept quite general when treating the classical and Pfirsch–Schlüter transport, parallel bootstrap current and semi-collisional physics, it is assumed that the fraction of trapped particles is small for the banana regime contribution. This is to justify the use of a model collision term when acting on the localised (in velocity space) solutions that remain after the Spitzer solutions have been exploited to account for the bulk of the passing distributions. In this respect, unlike standard neoclassical transport theory, the calculation involves the second Spitzer solution connected with a parallel temperature gradient, because this stability problem involves parallel temperature gradients that cannot occur in equilibrium toroidal transport theory. Furthermore, a calculation of the linearised neoclassical radial transport of toroidal momentum for general geometry is required to complete the vorticity equation. The solutions of the resulting set of equations do not match properly to the ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations at large distances from the layer, and a further, intermediate layer involving ion corrections to the electrical conductivity and ion parallel thermal transport is invoked to achieve this matching and allow one to correctly calculate the layer $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E5}^{\prime }$.

The purpose of the current work is to find numerical solutions of the steady state inhomogeneous Vlasov equation. This problem has a wide range of applications in the kinetic simulation of non-thermal plasmas. However, the direct application of either time stepping schemes or iterative methods (such as Krylov-based methods such as the generalized minimal residual method (GMRES) or relaxation schemes) is computationally expensive. In the former case the slowest time scale in the system forces us to perform a long time integration while in the latter case a large number of iterations is required. In this paper we propose a preconditioner based on an alternating direction implicit type splitting method. This preconditioner is then combined with both GMRES and Richardson iteration. The resulting numerical schemes scale almost ideally (i.e. the computational effort is proportional to the number of grid points). Numerical simulations conducted show that this can result in a speed-up of close to two orders of magnitude (even for intermediate grid sizes) with respect to the unpreconditioned case. In addition, we discuss the characteristics of these numerical methods and show the results for a number of numerical simulations.

In this paper, we present two codes for the linear stability analysis of the ion temperature gradient instability in toroidal geometry using a gyrokinetic multi-waterbag model for ion dynamics. The first one solves the linearized ion dynamics as an initial value problem, while the second relies on an asymptotic expansion in the so-called ballooning representation allowing us to build a tractable eigenvalue problem. Results from the two codes are presented and compared for equilibria based on modified Cyclone parameters. A good agreement between both codes is found for a class of equilibria with a narrow extent in perpendicular velocity and for which trapped particle orbits are ignored. The local spectrum computed by the eigenvalue is shown to agree remarkably well with previous Cyclone results when trapped particle orbits are included. Lastly we discuss how the equilibrium building procedure for this type of waterbag model requires particular care when dealing with closed equilibrium contours related to the presence of trapped particle orbits.

We calculate the disruption scale $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}_{\text{D}}$ at which sheet-like structures in dynamically aligned Alfvénic turbulence are destroyed by the onset of magnetic reconnection in a low-$\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}$ collisionless plasma. The scaling of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}_{\text{D}}$ depends on the order of the statistics being considered, with more intense structures being disrupted at larger scales. The disruption scale for the structures that dominate the energy spectrum is $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}_{\text{D}}\sim L_{\bot }^{1/9}(d_{e}\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}_{s})^{4/9}$, where $d_{e}$ is the electron inertial scale, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}_{s}$ is the ion sound scale and $L_{\bot }$ is the outer scale of the turbulence. When $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}_{e}$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}_{s}/L_{\bot }$ are sufficiently small, the scale $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}_{\text{D}}$ is larger than $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}_{s}$ and there is a break in the energy spectrum at $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}_{\text{D}}$, rather than at $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}_{s}$. We propose that the fluctuations produced by the disruption are circularised flux ropes, which may have already been observed in the solar wind. We predict the relationship between the amplitude and radius of these structures and quantify the importance of the disruption process to the cascade in terms of the filling fraction of undisrupted structures and the fractional reduction of the energy contained in them at the ion sound scale $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}_{s}$. Both of these fractions depend strongly on $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}_{e}$, with the disrupted structures becoming more important at lower $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}_{e}$. Finally, we predict that the energy spectrum between $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}_{\text{D}}$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}_{s}$ is steeper than $k_{\bot }^{-3}$, when this range exists. Such a steep ‘transition range’ is sometimes observed in short intervals of solar-wind turbulence. The onset of collisionless magnetic reconnection may therefore significantly affect the nature of plasma turbulence around the ion gyroscale.

Although, for current laser pulse energies, the weakly nonlinear regime of laser wakefield acceleration is known to be the optimal for reaching the highest possible electron energies, the capabilities of upcoming large laser systems will provide the possibility of running highly nonlinear regimes of laser pulse propagation in underdense or near-critical plasmas. Using an extended particle-in-cell (PIC) model that takes into account all the relevant physics, we show that such regimes can be implemented with external guiding for a relatively long distance of propagation and allow for the stable transformation of laser energy into other types of energy, including the kinetic energy of a large number of high energy electrons and their incoherent emission of photons. This is despite the fact that the high intensity of the laser pulse triggers a number of new mechanisms of energy depletion, which we investigate systematically.

The analysis of the Parker–Moffatt problem, recently revisited in Pezzi et al. (Astrophys. J., vol. 834, 2017, p. 166), is here extended by including Hall magnetohydrodynamics and two hybrid kinetic Vlasov–Maxwell numerical models. The presence of dispersive and kinetic features is studied in detail and a comparison between the two kinetic codes is also reported. Focus on the presence of non-Maxwellian signatures shows that – during the collision – regions characterized by strong temperature anisotropy are recovered and the proton distribution function displays a beam along the direction of the magnetic field, similar to some recent observations of the solar wind.

Explicitly covariant dispersion relations for a variety of plasma waves in unmagnetized and magnetized plasmas are derived in a systematic manner from a fully covariant plasma formulation. One needs to invoke relatively little known invariant combinations constructed from the ambient electromagnetic fields and the wave vector to accomplish the program. The implication of this work applied to the self-induced transparency effect is discussed. Some problems arising from the inconsistent use of relativity are pointed out.

Analytical models for nonlinear electron plasma waves in weakly magnetized plasmas are developed for single as well as multi-mode conditions, with continuous wave spectra being a limiting case. The conditions for wave decay as well as modulational instabilities are analysed. Our results demonstrate that slow or nearly stationary plasma density variations can be found for weakly magnetized plasmas even for weakly nonlinear electron plasma waves without involving cavitation of large amplitude plasma waves. A reduction of the growth rates for decay as well as modulational instabilities are found when the spectral width of the wave spectrum is increased. Some of our results are relevant for the interpretation of the nonlinearly enhanced ion acoustic lines often observed in non-equilibrium ionospheres.

The interaction of radio frequency waves with charged particles in a magnetized plasma is usually described by the quasilinear operator that was originally formulated by Kennel & Engelmann (Phys. Fluids, vol. 9, 1966, pp. 2377–2388). In their formulation the plasma is assumed to be homogenous and embedded in a uniform magnetic field. In tokamak plasmas the Kennel–Engelmann operator does not capture the magnetic drifts of the particles that are inherent to the non-uniform magnetic field. To overcome this deficiency a combined drift and gyrokinetic derivation is employed to derive the quasilinear operator for radio frequency heating and current drive in a tokamak with magnetic drifts retained. The derivation requires retaining the magnetic moment to higher order in both the unperturbed and perturbed kinetic equations. The formal prescription for determining the perturbed distribution function then follows a novel procedure in which two non-resonant terms must be evaluated explicitly. The systematic analysis leads to a diffusion equation that is compact and completely expressed in terms of the drift kinetic variables. The equation is not transit averaged, and satisfies the entropy principle, while retaining the full poloidal angle variation without resorting to Fourier decomposition. As the diffusion equation is in physical variables, it can be implemented in any computational code. In the Kennel–Engelmann formalism, the wave–particle resonant delta function is either for the Landau resonance or the Doppler shifted cyclotron resonance. In the combined gyro and drift kinetic approach, a term related to the magnetic drift modifies the resonance condition.

We take advantage of previous research in the field of cyclotron auto resonance maser (CARM) and undulator-based free electron laser (U-FEL) sources to establish a common formalism for the relevant description of the underlying physical mechanisms. This strategy is aimed at stressing the deep analogies between the two devices and at providing a practical tool for their study based on the use of well-tested scaling formulae developed independently for the two systems.

The influence of a nonlinear ion wake field on the dust-lattice wave is investigated in complex dusty plasmas. The dispersion relation for the dust-lattice wave is derived from the equation of motion including the contribution due to the nearest-neighbour dust grain interaction. The results show that the nonlinear wake-field effect increases the wave frequency, especially at the maximum peak positions. It is found that the oscillatory behaviour of the dust-lattice wave enhances with an increase of the spacing of the dust grains. It is also found that the amplitude of the dust-lattice wave significantly decreases with an increase of the inter-dust grain distance. In addition, it is found that the amplitude of the dust-lattice wave increases with increasing Debye length. The variation of the dust-lattice wave due to the Mach number and plasma parameters is also discussed.

The dust acoustic, or dust density, wave is a very low frequency collective mode in a dusty plasma that is associated with the motion of the charged and massive dust grains. An ion flow due to an electric field can excite these waves via an ion–dust streaming instability. Theories of this instability have often assumed a shifted-Maxwellian ion velocity distribution. Recently, the linear kinetic theory of this instability was considered using a non-Maxwellian ion velocity distribution (Kählert, Phys. Plasmas, vol. 22, 2015, 073703). In this paper, we present one-dimensional PIC simulations of the nonlinear development of the ion–dust streaming instability, comparing the results for these two types of ion velocity distributions, for several values of the ion drift speed and collision rate. Parameters are considered that reflect the ordering of plasma and dust quantities in laboratory dusty plasma experiments. It is found that, in general, the wave energy density is smaller in the simulations with a non-Maxwellian ion distribution.
