Nationalities Papers is the place to turn for cutting edge multidisciplinary work on nationalism, migration, diasporas, and ethnic conflict. The journal’s geographical emphasis is on Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe, Russia, Ukraine, the Caucasus, and Eurasia. Our mission is to feature both theoretical and empirical work, and review articles. We publish high-quality peer-reviewed articles from historians, political scientists, sociologists, and anthropologists, as well as scholars from other fields. We encourage submissions from women, minorities, people with disabilities, veterans, and underrepresented groups.

Nationalities Papers is the journal of the Association for the Study of Nationalities (ASN), bringing together scholars worldwide working on nationalism and ethnicity in Central and Eastern Europe, the Balkans, and Eurasia.

Manuscript Submission

Nationalities Papers uses an online manuscript and peer review website. Manuscripts should be submitted here: https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/cnap. The ScholarOne Manuscripts website will guide authors through the submission process. All correspondence, including the editor's decision and request for revisions, will be done by e-mail. Types of Manuscripts

We publish various types of manuscripts including Original Articles, Review Essays, Book Reviews, and accept Special Issue proposals. We also often publish State of the Field contributions, Book Review Symposia, Film Reviews, and Tributes.

Original Article
A typical original article for this journal should be no more than 12,000 words; this limit includes tables, references, figure captions, endnotes.

State of the Field Contribution
A typical state of the field contribution for this journal should be no more than 5,000 words; this limit includes tables, references, figure captions, endnotes.

Review Essay
A typical review essay for this journal should be no more than 5,000 words; this limit includes tables, references, figure captions, endnotes.

Book Review
Nationalities Papers typically solicits book reviews, although we also entertain proposals for reviews of works that engage with topics pertinent to our field. A typical book review should be no more than 1,000 words. For questions regarding book reviews, or to submit a proposal, please contact the book review editor at natpapers.bookreviews@gmail.com

Film Review
A typical film review for this journal should be no more than 1,000 words; this limit includes tables, references, figure captions, endnotes.

Please note that this journal only publishes manuscripts in English. Manuscripts must be written in clear and concise English and should conform to the general style of the journal.

Preconditions for Peer Review

Submissions that satisfy the aim and scope of Nationalities Papers will be considered for peer review. Before submitting your manuscript, please ensure that you carefully read and adhere to all the guidelines and instructions to authors provided below. Manuscripts not conforming to these guidelines may be returned. Submission of an article implies that the work described has not been published previously, and that it is not currently being considered by another journal. Authors must also confirm that each author has seen and approved the contents of the submitted manuscript.

If material from other copyrighted works is included, the authors must have obtained written permission from the copyright owners and credited the sources in the article. The publisher has preprinted forms for use by authors in these cases: https://www.cambridge.org/about-us/rights-permissions.

Disclosures

Authors must include a disclosures statement in their title page when they submit, which will be published in their article. These include any situation that could be perceived to exert an undue influence on an author's presentation of their work. They may include, but are not limited to, financial, professional, contractual or personal relationships or situations.

If the manuscript has multiple authors, the disclosure statement should list all contributing authors, e.g. "Disclosure. Author A is employed at company B. Author C owns shares in company D, is on the Board of company E and is a member of organisation F. Author G has received grants from company H in the past."

If an author wishes to state they have no disclosures to make, their statement should say "Disclosures. None."

Financial Support / Funding Statement

Within this section please provide details of the sources of financial support for all authors, including grant numbers, for example:

“This work was supported by the Medical Research Council (grant number XXXXXXX)”.

Multiple grant numbers should be separated by a comma and space, and where research was funded by more than one agency the different agencies should be separated by a semi-colon, with “and” before the final funder. Grants held by different authors should be identified as belonging to individual authors by the authors’ initials, for example:

“This work was supported by the Wellcome Trust (AB, grant numbers XXXX, YYYY), (CD, grant number ZZZZ); the Natural Environment Research Council (EF, grant number FFFF); and the National Institutes of Health (AB, grant number GGGG), (EF, grant number HHHH).”

Where no specific funding has been provided for research, please provide the following statement:

“This research received no specific grant from any funding agency, commercial or not-for-profit sectors.”

Acknowledgements

Authors can use this section to acknowledge and thank colleagues, institutions, workshop organizers, family members, etc that have helped with the research and/or writing process. It is important that that any type of funding information or financial support listed under ‘Financial Support’ rather than Acknowledgements so that it can easily be tagged and captured separately.

Author details: Please include all authors’ full names, affiliations, postal addresses, telephone numbers, and email addresses on the title page. Where available, please also include social media handles (Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn). One author will need to be identified as the corresponding author, and make sure to include their email address.

Abstract

An abstract of no more than 200 words. Please indicate the abstract with a heading.

Keywords and other information

Provide the discipline area and topic for your manuscript.

Provide 3-5 keywords to help readers find your article.

Word Count

Please include a word count for your paper. A typical paper for this journal should be no more than 12,000 words; this limit includes tables, references, figure captions, footnotes, endnotes, and an abstract of 200 words.

Biographical note

Please supply a short biographical note for each author. This could be adapted from your departmental website or academic networking profile and should be relatively brief (i.e., no more than 150 words).

In the text, please omit self-references after the title page that might reveal your identity. It is possible to cite your work without revealing your identity.

Supplemental online material (optional)

Supplemental material can be a video, dataset, fileset, sound file, or anything which supports (and is pertinent to) your paper. A statement should be added after the Disclosures statement to read: “Supplementary Material: For supplementary material accompanying this paper, visit cambridge.org/NPS.” The link will be replaced by your article’s DOI during the production process.

Figures and Tables

Transliteration Style and Romanization

  • Please make sure that your transliterations are based on the ALA-LC Romanization Tables approved by the Library of Congress and available here: https://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/roman.html
  • For Russian and Ukranian, follow Library of Congress transliteration tables but without any diacritical marks above the letters. We do use ' and " to signify the soft and hard sign, but they come after the letter, not above it. We also make exceptions for names that are well known in a different transliteration, e.g. Yeltsin. Make sure that "Kyiv" is spelt that way, unless you are referring to pre-1917 Kiev. Always transliterate cyrillic into Latin script.
  • Diacritics should be used for all Slavic languages written in Latin script, including Slovene, Croat, Bosnian, Serbian, and Montenegrin. While sometimes cyrillic might be used, esp. in Serbian, all the languages can be and should be transcribed with diacritics. The letters in use  are ČĆŠŽ and Đ.

If you are submitting your manuscript as a Word document, please ensure that all equations are editable.

Units

Please use SI units (non-italicized).

The reference list should be arranged alphabetically according to the author’s surname. If there are more than ten authors, list the first seven names followed by et al.

Sources are cited in the text, usually in parentheses, with the author’s surname, the publication date of the work cited, and a page number, if necessary.

Endnotes

Endnotes should be kept at a minimum. Any references cited in the endnotes should also be included in the reference list.

After Submission

Review

All articles undergo rigorous peer review based on an initial editor screening and double-blind review by a minimum of two anonymous reviewers. 

It is rare for a manuscript to be accepted for publication without any changes. We will endeavor to send revised manuscripts for review to one or more of the reviewers from the first round. If an article is revised and the original reviewers are not available, then additional reviewers will be contacted. The editor bases his decision on the reviews, although he is not bound by them.

Proofs
PDF proofs will be sent by e-mail to the corresponding author. It is the responsibility of the authors to read the proofs carefully and to note all errors. Only necessary changes should be made and corrections should be returned promptly.

Publication Charges
There are no submission fees, publication fees, or page charges for this journal. Open Access is optional, as described below.

Color figures will be reproduced in color in your online article free of charge. If it is necessary for the figures to be reproduced in color in the print version, a charge of $320 per figure will apply.

Complying with Funding Agencies
We will deposit all National Institutes of Health or Wellcome Trust-funded papers into PubMedCentral on behalf of authors, meeting the requirements of their respective policies. If this applies to you, please indicate as such when prompted during the submission process within ScholarOne.

Open Access

Nationalities Papers adheres to the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidelines on research and publications ethics.

Nationalities Papers and Cambridge University Press take issues of copyright infringement, plagiarism, or other breaches of best practice in publication very seriously. We seek to protect the rights of our authors and we always investigate claims of plagiarism or misuse of articles published in the journal. Equally, we seek to protect the reputation of the journal against malpractice. Submitted articles may be checked using duplication-checking software. Where an article is found to have plagiarized other work or included third-party copyright material without permission or with insufficient acknowledgement, or where authorship of the article is contested, we reserve the right to take action including, but not limited to: publishing an erratum or corrigendum (correction); retracting the article (removing it from the journal); taking up the matter with the head of department or dean of the author’s institution and/or relevant academic bodies or societies; banning the author from publication in the journal, or appropriate legal action.

Cover Photograph

Each cover of Nationalities Papers displays a photograph. These photographs represent a variety of discipline areas/topics and geographic locations.

The Journal invites authors of manuscripts accepted for publication to submit photos for consideration. [Image size: 180 mm wide x 260 mm high. Format: TIFF or EPS. Resolution: 300 dpi.] A caption should be submitted with each photograph. Also provide the name of the photographer as well as written permission from the copyright owner for the use of the image for publication.

We recommend that authors have their manuscripts checked by an English language native speaker before submission; this will ensure that submissions are judged at peer review exclusively on academic merit. Cambridge University Press partners with American Journal Experts to provide a high quality service to authors. More information can be found here. Use of this service is entirely voluntary and does not guarantee acceptance, nor does its use require authors to later submit to a Cambridge journal.

ORCID

Nationalities Papers now requires that all corresponding authors identify themselves using their ORCID iD when submitting a manuscript to the journal. ORCID provides a unique identifier for researchers and, through integration in key research workflows such as manuscript submission and grant applications, provides the following benefits:

  • Discoverability: ORCID increases the discoverability of your publications, by enabling smarter publisher systems and by helping readers to reliably find work that you’ve authored.
  • Convenience: As more organisations use ORCID, providing your iD or using it to register for services will automatically link activities to your ORCID record, and will enable you to share this information with other systems and platforms you use, saving you re-keying information multiple times.
  • Keeping track: Your ORCID record is a neat place to store and (if you choose) share validated information about your research activities and affiliations.
