page 381 note 1 The parallel in Matthew (xii. 39) has ‘the sign of Jonah the prophet’. But it is Luke who preserves the correct form of the common source. This is clear also from what follows, for Matthew's comparison of the Son of man's three days and three nights in the heart of the earth with Jonah's sojourn in the whale's belly is secondary.
