The unfreezing of the Synoptic problem in recent years, for which we must be particularly grateful to Professor W. R. Farmer's survey, has been a healthy, if painful, experience. It is far too early yet to predict what new patterns, or modifications to previous patterns, will establish themselves. It is a time for rigorous testing out of suggestions that have disturbed, if not shaken, the critical consensus. What follows is but a small sample dip into the mass of material that needs to be looked at afresh. The passage selected – what is commonly known as the parable of the Wicked Husbandmen – merits attention for several reasons. It is as securely grounded in the tradition of Jesus's life and teaching as any other. It is among those listed by Farmer where the verbal agreement between the three Synoptists is so greatas to make some theory of literary interrelationship inescapable. It has the advantage now of a ‘fourth dimension’ in a close but in all probability independent parallel in the Gospel of Thomas. Yet, rather surprisingly, it is not discussed by Farmer either in his new ‘redaction ofthe Synoptic tradition in Mark’, though he analyses at length the incidents on either side of it, or in his survey of the parables as important historical evidence for the manhood of Jesus. So, despite the many previous treatments it has received, it may be justifiable to look at it once again for what light it may shed on the elusive solution to the oldest problem confronting Gospel critics.

Saint Paul a été plusieurs fois accusé de manquer de bienveillance à l'endroit du monde féminin. On lui a reproché d'avoir en ce domaine une mentalité plus juive que chrétienne, de regarder la femme comme un être qui serait par nature inférieur à l'homme et de faire d'elle simplement ‘l'image d'une image’, c'est-à-dire l'image de l'homme, qui seul serait l'image directe de Dieu, alors que selon le premier chapitre de la Genèse, l'homme et la femme sont créés ensemble comme une unique image de Dieu. On lui a encore reproché de se montrer infidèle à cet égard à l'esprit du Christ des Évangiles qui a tant fait pour mettre en évidence la dignité de la femme et dont les gestes de délicatesse et de bonté à son endroit ne se comptent pas. Par ailleurs on ne saurait contester ce fait: au cours de l'histoire de l'Église, quelques textes pauliniens ont été maintes fois exploités à l'encontre du monde féminin et ont fait conclure à une infériorité congénitale de la femme par rapport à l'homme.

Die Hausoder Pflichttafeln des Neuen Testaments erhalten heute in der kritischen Exegese üblicherweise schlechte theologische Zensuren. Wo mansich über die historischen und religionsgeschichtlichen Fragen hinaus theologisch mit ihnen auseinandersetzt, ist ‘Verbürgerlichung’ noch eines der harm-losesten Urteile, das über sie gefällt wird. Schon K. Weidinger urteilte, man müsse gegenüber dem ‘heißen Atem der ersten Epoche’ des Urchristentums von einem ‘Rückschritt’ sprechen, denn die Haustafeln seien moralisch und arbeiteten mit ‘schwachen, gelaüufigen Motiven’. S. Schulz findet in ihnen eine verhängnisvolle ‘frühkatholische Weltanpassung’, die ‘die herrschende Ordnung als gottgewollte Schöpfungsordnung religiös paraphrasierte und christlich überhöhte’ hier werde ‘widerspruchslose Einfügung in die bestehende Welt der sozialen Instanzen verlangt’ und ‘die damaligen sozialen Verhältnisse nicht nur für zeitlos gültig deklariert, sondern auf den Willen des Schöpfergottes zurückgeführt’. Daß solche und ähnliche Urteile von pamphlethafter Literatur begierig aufgegriffen und zugespitzt werden, versteht sich von selbst, und so heißt es denn in einer dieser Attacken, das ‘Klima der Menschenverachtung’, das das gesamte Neue Testament durchziehe, manifestiere sich vor allem in den Haustafeln, die das Urchristentum als ‘Agentur einer repressiven Gesellschaft’ überführen und ‘vor-gegebene Machtestablishments…mit göttlicher Glorie’ umhüllen sollen.

Les ‘addresses’ présidentielles de mes honorables prédépré cesseurs ont imposé à ce genre littéraire un certain esprit auquel je voudrais rester fidéle. Elles n'ont pas la pr'tention de présenter un programme ou d'imposer une méethode. Elles usent largement de la liberté de choix touchant les matiéres traitées. Elles évitent d'aborder des sujets trop techniquement spécialisés sans se diluer en considérations générales. Parfois elles n'hésitent pas ` déboucher sur des conclusions touchant de larges ensembles. Elles sont en tout cas des points d'aboutissement d'etudes antérieures autant que des ouvertures sur de nouveaux horizons. M'inspirant, selon mes moyens, de cette tradition déjà longue, je voudrais revenir vers cette église de Thessalonique, une des premiéres communautés européennes évangélisée par l' Apôtre, qui a occupé plusieurs années de ma pensée et ne l'a jamais quittée totalement. Tout en abordant une péricope bien délimitée, je compte marquer la distance qui sépare une exégése vieille de vingt ans des perspectives actuelles.

Was δικαιοσύνη θεο⋯ bei Paulus besagt, ist immer noch umstritten. Bis in die jüngste Zeit hinein blieb dieser Begriff kontrovers. Aus der Fülle der Veröffentlichungen über diese Thematik sei nur auf die Monographien von Peter Stuhlmacher, Karl Kertelge, J. A. Ziesler und Elke Plutta-Messerschmidt hingewiesen. Doch sollen uns diese neueren Publikationen höchstens am Rande beschäftigen. Im Mittelpunkt unserer Überlegungen steht vielmehr der soeben erschienene Römerbriefkommentar Ernst Käsemanns. In ihm ist zusammengefaßt, was dieser Schüler Bultmanns im Laufe der letzten Jahrzehnte über Paulus und speziell über die δ.θ. gesagt hat. Es ist bekannt, daß Bultmann und Käsemanns in diesem Punkte differieren. Daß es aber gerade zwei der angesehensten und profiliertesten Neutestamentler sind, die eine Kontroverse über einen so zentralen Begriff der biblischen Verkündigung führen, macht wieder einmal deutlich, wie sehr Theologie immer wieder von neuem ihre Mitte bedenken muß; macht deutlich, wie wenig Theologie ein vorhandenes Etwas ist, das man sich als völlig Begriffenes in einem Akte aneignen kann. Theologie ist ja niemals statischer Besitz, Theologie ist immer wieder je neuer Vollzug, je neues Engagement, je neues Wagnis, je neues Sich-selbst-in-Frage-stellen. Deshalb lohnt sich der wissenschaftliche Streit um ihr Zentrum. Gerade hier sollte das Wort von Albert Einstein gelten: ‘Richtig streiten kann man nur mit seinen Brüdern und nahen Freunden; die andern sind einem zu fremd.’ Der notwendige theologische Streit um die δ.θ. verbindet allein schon dadurch, daß der Theologe als Theologe nur dann von ihr verantwortlich sprechen kann, wenn er es im Bewußtsein darum tut, ihr seine Existenz zu verdanken.

Als niemand ahnen konnte, daß die urchristliche Bewegung einmal die ganze Kultur verwandeln und gestalten sollte, waren ihre Missionare nicht die angesehenen Gründer des Christentums, sondern heimatlos vagabundierende Propagandisten ohne Erwerb und Wohnsitz. Sie verkörperten eineForm sozial-abweichenden Verhaltens, das sich grundlegenden Normen und Notwendigkeiten der Gesellschaft entzogen hatte; man denke an die Nachfolgegebote der Heimat- und Besitz-, Schutz- und Familienlosigkeit. Sie predigten und lebten so eine Freiheit gegenüber grundlegenden sozialen Verpflichtungen, die nur für den praktizierbar ist, der sich den stabilisierendenund domestizierenden Wirkungen kontinuierlichen Arbeitslebens entzogen hat – nicht durch Privilegien des Besitzes, sondern durch die asketische Armut einer ungesicherten Randexistenz, die dem Leben kynischer Wanderphilosophen vergleichbar ist. Nun ist aber auch der größte Asket auf Lebensunterhalt angewiesen. Wenn er selbst nicht arbeitet, heißit das: Er ist auf andere Menschen angewiesen, die für ihn arbeiten. Er bleibt so auf handfeste Weise an diese Welt gebunden, mag er sich auch sonst noch so sehr von ihr distanzieren. Die Frage des Lebensunterhaltsrührt daher an die Wurzeln seiner geistigen Existenz, sie berührtdie Glaubwürdigkeit seiner exponierten Lebensweise. Es ist daher sicherlich kein Zufall, daß diese Frage in den Anweisungen an urchristliche Wanderprediger einen breiten Raum einnimmt (vgl. die Aussendungsrede Lc. x. 3 ff. parr.), daß sie in den Gemeinderegeln für den Umgang mit wandernden Charismatikern dominiert (Mt. x. 40–2; Did. xi) und zu einem zentralen Thema in den Auseinander-setzungen zwischen konkurrierenden Wanderpredigern werden konnte (I Cor. ix; II Cor. x-xiii): Die soziale Legitimität der wandernden Prediger hängt in der Tat weitgehend davon ab, wie sie sich ihren Lebensunterhalt verschaffen.

Pour situer théologiquement le problème qui va nous occuper ici, je débuterai par une incursion dans le domaine de l'histoire ecclésiastique. Parmi les nombreux points de divergence qui opposèrent au XVIe siècle Kaspar von Schwenkfeld aux luthériens, l'un d'eux touchait à la manière dont Dieu intervient. Schwenkfeld prétendait que 1'Écriture Sainte ne sait rien des moyens (en allemand Mittel) et parle uniquement du Christ et de sa grâace qu'il distribue librement en Esprit. Les luthériens ripostèrent dans le deuxième épitome de la Formule de Concorde (1580): ‘Reiicimus etiam damnamusque Enthusiastarum errorem, qui fingunt Deum immediate [en allemand, ohne Mittel], absque verbi Dei auditu et sine sacramentorum usu, homines ad se trahere, illuminare, iustificare et salvare.’

Die folgenden Erwägungen halten sich in einem engen Rahmen; sie befassen sich mit einer historischen Einzelfrage der sog. ‘Parteien’ in Korinth, mit denen sich Paulus I Cor. i-iv auseinandersetzt: mit der Kephaspartei und ihrem Verhältnis zu Paulus. Ich behalte den traditionellen Ausdruck ‘Parteien’ bei, gebrauche ihn aber in neutralem Sinn, d. h. ohne die theologische und kirchenpolitische Füllung, die F. C. Baur ihm gegeben hat; er dürfte das Phänomen der σχ⋯σματα und ἔριδɛς und der dazu gehörenden Bekenntnisse zu bestimmten Personen⋯γώ εἰμι Πα⋯;λοu κτλ. (i. 10–12) angemessener bezeichnen als etwa der Ausdruck ‘Gruppe’, der soziologisch vorbelastet ist, oder etwa der Ausdruck ‘Clique’, der ein depravierendes Voruteil enthält.

In 1892 Adolf Harnack, writing on the relation of the Prologue to the Fourth Gospel, posed the question in these words: ‘What is the aim of the Gospel, what is the aim of the Prologue? Are these aims identical or is the Prologue really an introduction to the Gospel?… Is it the key to understanding the Gospel?’ My aim in this paper is to consider once again this question of the function of these opening verses. What did the author – or redactor – of the gospel aim to achieve by beginning his book in this way?

The ever-increasing volume of scholarly publications dealing with Johannine problems encourages the hope that a solution of what Harnack called the Johannine riddle is at last in sight. Yet a survey of the literature may leave the impression that scholars, like so many proverbial horsemen, are riding off in different directions through a trackless morass. Such an impression is not entirely accurate, however, for significant patterns and points of coincidence areemerging from what at first appears to be a complex and rather confused picture. The purpose of this article, therefore, is to point to several well-trodden pathways through the wildernessof Johannine problems which others have hewn out, and by clarification, summary and assessmentof some of the more important evidences bearing upon Johannine origins to suggest why these paths are well chosen and where they may be leading us.

At the start, a definition of limits:

There is no attempt in what follows to give a total view of Johannine christology. We shall concentrate mainly on the narrative materials in the gospel, for it is there that redaction-critical work now seems most practicable; consequently, our sights can hardly be global. At the same time, however, we do not limit ourselves to the uppermost layer of christology in the narratives, for we shall be seeking to set the evangelist's thought in sharper perspective by the very process of comparing it – and often contrasting it – to the tradition, more specifically the source, on which he depends. Depth, then, more than breadth, will be our aim; depth such as we can gain from a few test bores into the Johannine terrain.

The appearance of another article on this fascinating and yet controversial subject needs some justification. After all, has not everything already been said? Since the publication of Rengstorf's famous study in Kittel have not the lines been drawn, the varying positions taken up and the evidence minutely sifted for every clue which might help us unravel a complicated New Testament crux interpretum? Is there really anything new to be said?

Die folgenden Erwägungen und Darlegungen sind ein besonders problematisches und deshalb des Gedankenaustauschs im Voraus sehr bedürftiges Teilstück eines Manuskriptes einer ‘Einleitung in die Schriften des Neuen Testaments’, die in der Evangelischen Verlagsanstalt Berlin erscheinen wird. Für die Voraussetzungen, die im Rahmen dieses Ausschnitts nicht begründet und geklärt werden können, darf ich auf dieses hoffentlich bald gedruckt vorliegende Buch verweisen.

When discussing commentaries friends have repeatedly suggested to me that the commentary genre is at present not the most creative format within which to work. This may or may not be true, but the enterprise certainly provides for some strange experiences. It has been my experience that things go smoothly as long as one does not ask too many questions. The present paper, however, is the preliminary outcome of asking too many questions about how to arrive at an ‘outline’ of the letter to the Galatians. Nearly all commentaries and Introductions to the New Testament contain such an outline, table of contents, or paraphrase of the argument. However, despite an extensive search, I have not been able to find any consideration given to possible criteria and methods for determining such an outline.

Throughout the present century historians of Christian asceticism, especially in the Syriac-speaking area, have returned repeatedly to the problem posed by a passage in Aphrahat's seventh Demonstration, the natural implication of which seems to be that in his day baptism was reserved for those who consecrated themselves to Christ in virginity or by renouncing marital intercourse, to become members of the ‘Covenant’ (qyāmâ) which was evidently regarded as the core or heart of the Church. The question was raised provocatively by F. C. Burkitt (1899, 1904) and taken up by R. H. Connolly, with an intervening reply by Burkitt, in 1905–7. Connolly rightly argued that by Aphrahat's time (fl. 336–45) married people must have been regarded as members of the Church, and that the ‘penitents’ discussed by Aphrahat were Christians who had ‘fallen’ after baptism, but he overplayed his hand in identifying the Bnay Qyāmâ simply as ‘monks’. An undertone of denominational controversy remained throughout the subsequent discussion, continued by (among others) H. Koch (1911), K. Müller (1927) and E.J. Duncan (1945). It was A. Vööbus who showed the way out of the impasse by his perceptive suggestion that the exhortation in Dem. VII is a liturgical text which had survived into Aphrahat's day but whose restrictive implications were no longer in force. At the same time, under the powerful impetus of the discoveries of the Qumran, Nag Hammadi and Manichaean documents, with consequently increasing understanding of early Jewish Christianity in its many varieties, and realization that Syrian asceticism was not derivative from Egypt but probably earlier, the basic concepts and terminology of asceticism were being studied anew by A. Adam, E. Beck, G. Kretschmar, P. Nagel, M. Black, J. Gribomont, A. Guillaumont and others. Study of early Syriac asceticism continues, as is shown by G. Nedungatt's recent articles but there still remains more to be done to follow up Vööbus's hint about the genre of the exhortation quoted by Aphrahat in Dem. VII.

Es ist deutlich, daß die Überlieferung der Davidssohnfrage für die erste Christenheit eine besondere Bedeutung besaß, erscheint doch hier Ps. cx. I im Munde Jesu selbst, also jene alttestamentliche Aussage, die wie kaum eine andere eine christologische Ausstrahlungskraft für das ganze Neue Testament besitzt. Wer daraus folgert, erst die christliche Theologie habe den christologischen Anschluß an Ps. cx. I gefunden, steht in der Gefahr, Ursache und Wirkung zu verwechseln, vermag kaum zu erklären, warum eine spätere christologische Position retrospektiv in die Gestalt einer rätsel-haften und darum schwer deutbaren Frage gekleidet wurde, und versperrt zudem den Zugang zu der Frage, inwieweit hier eine Bewegung der Messianologie zum Zuge kommt, die bereits vor Jesus im Gange war, bekommt also in der Beschränkung dieser Frage auf die Zeit nach Jesus das mögliche Zuvor dieser Frage vor Jesus nicht in den Blick. Vor allem aber ist zu beachten, daß unsere Texte zunächst nicht eine spezifisch christologische Frage sichtbar machen – das wäre etwa das Verhältnis von Messias, Kreuz und Auferstehung –, sondern eine Frage der Messianologie, so sehr die Davidssohnfrage durch den, der sie stellt, und mit der Geschichte, in die sie hineingehört, zu einer Frage der Christologie wird.

Some recent writing both on the gospels and on some of the Pauline epistles has shown a certain tendency to work with presuppositions in which a circularity in reasoning can be detected. On the basis of arguments (of varying power to convince) making use of a selection of passages in the work concerned, the work itself – the gospel or epistle as it now stands in the Canon – has been made the subject of hypotheses about the situation which evoked its composition, and about resultant polemical or other intentions determining the nature of the work as a whole. All individual passages within this larger whole then tend to be pressed into service so as to provide further evidence in support of these hypotheses. This trend in recent exegesis is illustrated by some interpretations of II Corinthians iii published during the last decade. Theories about the identity and doctrines of Paul's opponents in Corinth having been arrived at on the basis of evidence found elsewhere in the epistle, the difficult third chapter has been found to shed corroborative or even additional light on both. It is perhaps fair to say that these studies, from Georgi's influential treatment of this chapter onwards, indicate great ingenuity on the part of their authors (as well as claiming an even greater ingenuity for Paul himself, and attributing remarkable exegetical sensitivity to his readers in Corinth), but leave one with the impression that the wrong questions have been asked of the text.
