page 62 note 1 See p. 55. Previously a Japanese law, passed in 1933 and amended in 1936 and 1938, had designated the period 1 November to 15 March as the antarctic whaling season. The law permitted the taking of smaller whales than was allowed by the International Whaling Agreement. Japan adhered to the International Whaling Convention in April 1951.

page 62 note 2 A new vessel of this name, not to be confused with the pre-war factory ship.
