We consider an infinite planar straight strip perforated by small holes along a curve. In such a domain, we consider a general second-order elliptic operator subject to classical boundary conditions on the holes. Assuming that the perforation is non-periodic and satisfies rather weak assumptions, we describe all possible homogenized problems. Our main result is the norm-resolvent convergence of the perturbed operator to a homogenized one in various operator norms and the estimates for the rate of convergence. On the basis of the norm-resolvent convergence, we prove the convergence of the spectrum.

We characterize bounded mean oscillation in terms of the boundedness of commutators of various bilinear singular integral operators with pointwise multiplication. In particular, we study commutators of a wide class of bilinear operators of convolution type, including bilinear Calderón–Zygmund operators and the bilinear fractional integral operators.

We are concerned with the multiplicity of solutions to the system driven by a fractional operator with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. Namely, using fibering maps and the Nehari manifold, we obtain multiple solutions to the following fractional elliptic system:

This class of generalized Liénard polynomial differential systems has the invariant algebraic curve (y + Q(x)P(x))2 – Q(x)2 = 0 of hyperelliptic type.

We show the existence of connecting orbits for a class of singular second-order Hamiltonian systems

where, as opposed to most of the existing literature, we assume that the potential V has not one but any finite number of maxima of equal value. We use variational methods under the assumption that V (t, u) satisfies the so-called ‘strong-force’ condition at the singularity.

The existence and non-existence of several kinds of positive solutions to this equation when , f(u) = up(p > 1) and Ω is a bounded smooth domain were studied by Bandle, Moroz and Reichel in 2008. Here, we study exact the behaviour of positive solutions to this equation as d(x) → 0+ and d(x) → ∞, respectively, and the symmetry of positive solutions when , Ω is a half-space and f(u) is a more general nonlinearity term than up. Under suitable conditions for f, we show that the equation has a unique positive solution W, which is a function of x1 only, and W satisfies

We prove that a class of A-stable symplectic Runge–Kutta time semi-discretizations (including the Gauss–Legendre methods) applied to a class of semilinear Hamiltonian partial differential equations (PDEs) that are well posed on spaces of analytic functions with analytic initial data can be embedded into a modified Hamiltonian flow up to an exponentially small error. Consequently, such time semi-discretizations conserve the modified Hamiltonian up to an exponentially small error. The modified Hamiltonian is O(hp)-close to the original energy, where p is the order of the method and h is the time-step size. Examples of such systems are the semilinear wave equation, and the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with analytic nonlinearity and periodic boundary conditions. Standard Hamiltonian interpolation results do not apply here because of the occurrence of unbounded operators in the construction of the modified vector field. This loss of regularity in the construction can be taken care of by projecting the PDE to a subspace in which the operators occurring in the evolution equation are bounded, and by coupling the number of excited modes and the number of terms in the expansion of the modified vector field with the step size. This way we obtain exponential estimates of the form O(exp(–c/h1/(1+q))) with c > 0 and q ⩾ 0; for the semilinear wave equation, q = 1, and for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, q = 2. We give an example which shows that analyticity of the initial data is necessary to obtain exponential estimates.

Based on the martingale theory and large deviation techniques, we investigate the pth moment exponential stability criterion of the exact and numerical solutions to hybrid stochastic differential equations (SDEs) under the local Lipschitz condition. This new stability criterion shows that Markovian switching can serve as a stochastic stabilizing factor by its logarithmic moment-generating function. We also investigate the pth moment exponential stability of Euler–Maruyama (EM), backward EM (BEM) and split-step backward EM (SSBEM) approximations for hybrid SDEs and show that, under the additional linear growth condition, the EM method can share the mean-square exponential stability of the exact solution for sufficiently small step size. However, the BEM method can work without the linear growth condition. We further investigate the SSBEM method under a coupled condition.
