The RHS has published its annual Transactions of the Royal Historical Society since 1872. For nearly 150 years, Transactions published articles based on lectures and papers delivered at RHS-sponsored meetings by senior and early career scholars alike.

Since 2021 Transactions has also welcomed submissions from all historians. We now invite high-quality submissions across all time periods and regions from current researchers, worldwide.

From 2022 a new Editorial team is keen to receive submissions for a wider range of subjects, including:

  • research articles, focusing on historical subjects
  • research-based articles relating to history pedagogy, especially in Higher Education
  • the role of historical understanding in policy formation
  • commentaries on historical research methods and practices; studies of historiographical trends and developments
  • perspectives from historians working outside Higher Education, and the connections between sectors such as heritage, museums or archives with academic history teaching and research
  • discussion and opinion pieces between historians on topical areas of debate

In addition to this wider range of content, the Editors also welcome submissions of:

  • special sections of themed articles
  • contributions to The Common Room; shorter pieces that might focus on historiographical issues, methodological problems, intellectual debates or engagement with the latest scholarship.
