The Spanish pattern of economic growth during the last two centuries is quite unique. In the nineteenth century the country remained outside the process of industrialization, but during the twentieth century he has joined the small group of developed economies. This article tests the existence of discontinuities between 1850–1936 in the series of PNB, industrial production and private and public investment by utilizing recent developments in the econometric analysis associated with the work of Perron and Zivot and Andrews. The results confirm the continuity of the Spanish growth during the decades considered. However, they also show two breakpoint years: 1870 in the serie of industrial production and 1919 in the data of public investment.

This article examines critically the interpretation of the Spanish agriculture bertween the en of the Ancien Regime and the Civil War as backward. It argues that the enviromental and technological constraints were of a great importance for the development of the agrarian sector n that period. As an example, the article examines the incidence of the water availability, the varieties of seeds and livestock and the structures of the crops, in the use of the new fertilisers and the mechanization of reaping and threshing.

The aim of this article is to think about the expansion in peasant property detectable from the end of nineteeth to the middle of twenteeth centuries. The research is centred around one particular Catalan region, the Baix Empordà. The main parts of the process were the break-up and, the sale of old estates, as well as its purchase —fragmented— by peasant sectors. Some explanatory elements are set, both related to the behaviour of landed sectors, and to the means that make possible the expansion of a significant group of peasant properties.

This article presents an serie of annual Spanish corporate's profits for the period 1880–1981. The index estimated represents very well Spanish big firms, and it provides for the first time annual measurement on profits for a very long period. The data suggests that profits experienced long trends and short-term fluctuations. Both movements are related with whole economy and industrial dynamics. The data equally suggests that profits fluctuations were extremely correlated with investment fluctuations.

This article examines the evolution of trade exchange between Spain and Cuba from 1878 to 1898, the variations in the volume and composition of the transactions and their effect on Spanish and Cuban economies as a whole, reviewing the impact of peninsular exports on the colonial market. The conclusions point to an instrumental overvaluation of Antillas' mercantile domination aiming to obtain adventages in Spain's commercial policy, which nevertheless helped to foster an awareness of dependence on the eve of the war of independence.
